Paul's Cure for Spiritual Drowsiness
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Hey there. Let’s get grounded together. I got an email the other day from some app I downloaded months ago and never opened. The subject line was: "We miss you!" And I just thought.. no, you don't. Your algorithm misses my data. It reminded me of playing Game Boy on long road trips as a kid, huddled next to a friend. We didn't need notifications to prove we were connected, we were just there. There's a kind of spiritual drowsiness that comes from confusing the algorithm for real presence, and it's leaving a lot of us feeling alone in a crowd.
Let us not sleep, as do others. — 1 Thessalonians 5:6The Briefing
Paul’s words here are so direct, right? "Let us not sleep." He’s basically saying, don’t just coast. Don’t go on spiritual autopilot. And truth is, it’s so easy to do. Life is like a long night drive. The drone of the engine, the blur of the lights… it can lull you into a trance. But here's where it gets real. Paul’s solution isn't some complex spiritual discipline, it’s fellowship. He’s pointing to the person in the passenger seat. He knew that believers who try to make the journey alone are the ones who end up on the spiritual breakdown lane. We need people who can check our blind spot, who can talk us through a tricky merge into a new season. And not just any talk, talk about Jesus. Talk about where He showed up, where we’re struggling to see Him. You know, where we pause to recognize the evidence of God. It’s that shared story that keeps our eyes open. Because this isn’t just a casual road trip, it’s an escape from something real, toward something eternal. And you don’t fall asleep when the stakes are that high.
⚔️ Your Mission
So, what do we do with this? We stop trying to drive alone. I want you to try this specific act of wakefulness today. Text one person you know who might be feeling the drone of the road and say: "Thinking of you. How's the journey right now?" You're not fixing anything, you're just getting in the passenger seat for a second to help them stay awake."Dear Lord, quiet the engine noise and the phantom notifications in our souls. Forgive us for drifting, for letting our eyes get heavy on this journey home. Wake us up with the gift of real presence, both Yours and that of the people You’ve put on the road with us. Give us the courage to be the voice that keeps another traveler from nodding off. Help us stay awake to Your goodness and Your goal for us. In Jesus' name... Amen."

It’s like, so easy to just zone out when I’m slinging drinks, or just dealing with all this new belief stuff. Paul’s cure, though… it’s about actively waking up, you know? Mind-blown how I gotta choose to remember God’s actually in the chaos, not just let my brain go on autopilot. Gotta stay sharp, damn.
You don't have to carry it alone.

Let us not sleep, as do others.1 Thessalonians 5:6
Paul is writing to believers, using sleep as a metaphor for a spiritual state. He's drawing a sharp line between his readers and "others" based on their level of alertness. This isn't about getting enough rest at night. It's about staying spiritually awake.
The "sleep" he warns against is a kind of spiritual drowsiness. It’s the complacency that comes from isolation and makes you forget what's at stake. The opposite is an intentional alertness. This focus comes from community with other Christians and from keeping your attention fixed on Jesus—remembering the heaven you're running toward and the danger you're leaving behind.

Yo, that ‘spiritual drowsiness’ part? Big facts. Facts. Gotta stay ready, no cap. Can’t be sleeping on the block, you know? Not when there’s work to do, people to reach right here. That’s it right there. Always gotta be sharp. Sharp. Our faith ain’t for sitting around, waiting for things to happen. Nah. We gotta be active. Active. Representing out here, you know what I mean? Got youth night in a bit, gonna make sure my crew gets this energy. Keep ’em wide awake and moving. 🔥👊
