The End of Death's Power
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Ready to build the witness today? Good to have you. Here's a question for a Wednesday morning, especially in the middle of this back-to-school scramble. Why does taking a day off sometimes feel more stressful than just working through it? We get so exhausted that we cancel the things we actually enjoy, just to keep up. We don't have the margin for even the good stuff. It feels like if we stop moving, for even a second, the whole thing will just fall apart. There's a constant, low-grade fear of what happens when we finally stop.
That through death He might destroy him that had the power of death. — Hebrews 2:14The Briefing
Okay but here's the part that wrecks me about this verse. God didn't have to tell us His strategy, but He did. And it's so beautifully upside-down. The text says Jesus destroyed the one who had the power of death,by dying. Think about that. He didn't fight death with more life. He walked right into the heart of the enemy's fortress, submitted to its power, and then detonated it from the inside out. He used death to kill Death. This isn't just a rescue. It's a hostile takeover. This reveals a God who doesn't just overpower His enemies,He out-thinks them. He uses their own greatest weapon against them to secure our freedom forever. This changes everything, you know? The fear of death is the taproot of so many of our other fears. The anxiety about not having enough time, not being enough, not getting it all done,it all grows from this one deep fear of the ultimate end. We're afraid of dormancy. We’re afraid of stopping. But the writer of Hebrews tells us that Jesus took the sharpest shears to that root. He didn't just trim the branches of our anxiety; He severed the source. What this means is that the cross isn't just a historical event we remember. It's a present reality we live in. It's a new identity grafted onto our own, one that's no longer subject to the power of the grave. So when we feel that pressure to keep running, to never rest, what are we really afraid of? We're afraid of falling behind. We're afraid of what happens if we stop. But this verse declares that the ultimate 'stop' has already been conquered. The final enemy has been disarmed. Because of that, we are truly free. Free to pause. Free to breathe. Free to rest without the nagging fear that we're losing ground. Christ's victory over the grave isn't just our hope for eternity,it's our permission for peace today. It’s our moment to breathe in grace, knowing the most important battle is already won.
⚔️ Your Mission
Here is your assignment, and it’s a simple one. The victory of Jesus over death means we don’t have to fear stopping. Let's get concrete: Sometime today, open your calendar. Find a fifteen-minute slot, block it out, and call it 'Dormancy'. When that time comes, stop everything. No phone, no emails, no planning. Just sit in the quiet and trust that because the ultimate end has been defeated, your small pause is not a threat. That is the mission."Jesus, we confess we are afraid of stopping. We hold our schedules and our to-do lists so tightly, believing that we are the ones holding it all together. But You walked into death itself and broke its power, proving You are the one who holds all things. Help us to unclench our fists. Help us surrender the frantic need for control. Let us rest in the finished work You accomplished, not just for our eternity, but for our sanity this afternoon. Let that truth take root in us today. In Jesus' name... Amen."

### What Hebrews 2:14 actually says
This verse explains a central purpose of Jesus’s death. It frames his death not as a tragedy, but as a strategic act. The goal was to confront and disarm the one who held the power of death itself.
That enemy is the devil. By dying, Jesus broke the devil's hold, removing death's curse and sting. For a believer, death is no longer a final punishment or something to be feared. It’s now the immediate passage from this life into God's presence.
In plain language, the verse is saying: Through his own death, Jesus destroyed the devil, the one who had the power of death.

Almost missed this. Soccer practice was wild today. But “end of death’s power”? That is fire. Real talk, trying to manage everything, sometimes you just need that win. No joke.
