Samuel's One Question That Changes Everything

A person at a crossroads, choosing between a dark path and a lit path.

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Let’s take a breath. It is really good to see you here. You ever get to the end of an hour and realize you watched… nothing? Several hours of something you cannot remember with any clarity, just a blur of flickering light. It’s so easy to do. And honestly? It feels a little like the rest of life, proving our identity all day with passwords and two-factor codes, just to feel like a ghost in the machine. We’re constantly being asked to prove who we are, but the deepest question of who we actually belong to often goes unanswered.

To whom belongest thou? — 1 Samuel 30:13

The Briefing

That’s one of those questions that feels like it’s from another time, right? 'To whom belongest thou?' But if you strip away the old language, Samuel is recording the most modern, most foundational question a person can face: Who do you work for? Who’s your master? Who do you answer to? And here’s what gets me, the very existence of the question tells us something crucial about God. It tells us He doesn’t operate in neutralities. There is no unclaimed territory in the spiritual world. We’re either under the banner of the Lord, or we’re serving someone else. That might sound harsh, but think about that. It means God is a King who makes a claim. He doesn’t just suggest or invite; He asserts His rightful ownership over creation and the people in it. It’s a question of absolute allegiance. Our whole world is filled with a kind of low-grade identity turbulence, isn't it? We belong to a company, a friend group, a political tribe, a family. We're constantly trying to figure out where we fit. But this ancient question from Samuel cuts through all that noise like a command from the control tower on your final approach. All those other identities are just weather. This one, this is the tarmac. It determines where you land. It’s the one identity that defines all the others. So for those of us who follow Jesus, the question isn’t a threat, it’s a reminder. We already belong to Him. The deal is done. The question for us today is, how do we live like it? The old writers would say it comes down to four things. You obey Him, let His word actually guide your choices. You love Him, let your heart be aimed at His. You trust Him, you stop trying to fly the plane yourself. And you’re decided for Him, you’re not ashamed of the uniform. That’s how people know. That's how you know.

⚔️ Your Mission

Here is the challenge for today. It's an 'Open Door' ask. Sometime this morning, quietly ask God one question: 'Lord, since I belong to You, what is one way I can make that clear today?' Then, just listen. The answer might be an act of quiet obedience, a bold word, or a simple choice to trust Him through the turbulence. Maybe that looks like writing down whatever you hear in a journal, marking the ground, so you don’t forget whose you are.
"Jesus, we stop for a second just to state the obvious truth that changes everything: we belong to You. It’s not a status we earn, it's a reality You bought. Let that single fact be the thing that governs our day. Let it direct our feet in obedience, our hearts in love, and our minds in trust. Make our allegiance to You so clear that no one has to ask. Let that truth take root in us today. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Dude, that part about just asking to hear? Wild. Like, I do not even know how to say this, but it’s not like screaming over music at the bar. Quiet is new.

Whew, Samuel’s one question! Just trying to find my coffee this morning felt like a theological dissertation. Seriously, with Judah trying to put the dog’s chew toy in the blender, a *singlequestion? That clarity. Man, sometimes it feels like I’m screaming into a pillow just to get quiet enough to even *thinka question. Yes Lord, can I get a witness for that struggle? Need that clear call.
