John: Tracing God's Mercy in Our Foundation

    April 14, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Morning. Or afternoon. Whenever you are, I’m glad we’re connecting. You ever been in a good conversation, really engaged, and then feel that ghost of a vibration in your pocket? Your phone isn't actually buzzing, but you swear it is. That phantom notification can pull your attention away, even from something real and present. Today, we’re talking about a truth that should cut through all the noise and establish a deeper presence.

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew Him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God." — 1 John 3:1

    The Briefing

We find this truth in John's letter, where he describes an incredible reality: we are called the children of God. Think about that for a moment. This isn't a temporary status, like another monthly subscription you might forget to cancel. This is who we are, a gift from the Father. This isn't a curated life we have to perform for others, carefully filtering our existence to appear perfect on the surface. John's words here remind us that our identity runs far deeper than any social `friction` or pressure to conform. But let's be real for a second... that's easy to read, harder to truly feel. Our experiences often feel like shifting `strata`, the ground beneath us uncertain. Yet, the text tells us, 'Beloved, now are we the sons of God.' This isn't a future promise; it's a present reality. This truth is the `bedrock` of our existence, a deep foundation that can withstand any `fault line` or `seismic` shift in our circumstances. We get to walk around carrying that truth. What a thing. God didn't have to say that. But He did. And He meant it. That's the kind of promise you build a whole life on, where we dig deep roots in shallow soil.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

So here is the mission, tying into that steady identity you now carry: I want you to try something today that acknowledges the `bedrock` of who you are. In one conversation today, practice 'quiet witnessing.' Instead of rushing to offer advice or share your own experience, just listen. Let your presence be anchored in this truth, giving someone else the gift of being truly heard, without judgment or interruption. No need to 'fix' anything, just be present.
"God, we need a reset. Thank you for the breathtaking `mercy` and love You have `bestowed` upon us, that we are truly called Your children. Help us to truly grasp this, to feel it in our bones, and to live from this profound identity. When the world tries to define us, or when doubt creeps in, remind us of this unshakeable truth, the deepest `strata` of who we are. Father, In Jesus' name... Amen."

The reflection on St. John, particularly regarding God’s mercy and our foundational truths, was quite pertinent. Amidst the incessant stream of transient information at the library, one can easily become disoriented. The devotional’s emphasis on the eternal “foundation” reminds me of the immutable truths we encounter at the Latin Mass, where the sacred liturgy itself forms us, shaping our very understanding of God. Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi. This morning, confronted with a rather disorganized archive, the thought offered a precise clarity. It is not about simply processing data, but about discerning the enduring essence, just as St. John meticulously presented the Incarnate Word. A reminder to pause, anchor oneself in the bedrock of faith, even amidst the intellectual clamor.

Just finished that Eb devotional on John. Real talk, the idea about God’s mercy being the actual foundation? That’s legit. Like, when the kids are going wild before school or a project deadline is totally fire, it’s easy to just focus on the chaos. But remembering there’s a bedrock of mercy under all that? Helps me pause. Not just surviving, but actually noticing God’s grace even in the meltdown. Need that energy at church. And for the band, too.
