    The Freedom of Loving Second

    September 14, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Welcome to the space. It's Monday, and for a lot of us, this is where we silence the hurry for just a minute. You know, you can love the people you're taking care of,your kids, your parents, your team, and also be completely exhausted. That love and that exhaustion are both true at the same time. And in those moments, it feels like our love is this finite resource, a battery draining down to zero. We're trying to give what we feel like we just don't have.

We love Him because He first loved us. — 1 John 4:19

    The Briefing

That one sentence from John is an entire re-ordering of the spiritual life. It’s not just a nice thought. It’s physics. It’s gravity. 'We love Him because He first loved us.' The action starts with Him. always. Our love for God isn't something we manufacture. It isn't a plant native to the soil of our own hearts. Honestly, left to ourselves, we wouldn't even know how to begin. But here's where it gets real.. God is the artist who makes the first mark on the canvas. He's the one who draws the initial sketch of love inside of us when there was nothing there before. Our ability to love Him,or anyone, really,is just the color we get to add to a design He already created. It’s an echo. A reflection. A response to a love that was already moving toward us when we were still turned the other way. He is the source, the initiator, and the sustainer of it all. Think about that. This completely changes the game. It means our love for God isn't a chore we have to perform or a feeling we have to work up. It’s not about our effort at all. It’s about our reception. The whole point is the contrast between our inability and His infinite ability. His love gives form to our emptiness. So when we feel like we have nothing left to give,to Him, to our family, to our work, the pressure is off. We don't have to create love out of thin air. Our only job is to open our hands and receive the love that has already been given.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Here is how we walk this out... Our love is a response. But we can't respond to what we don't perceive. Your move is simple: Find ten minutes today,in the car, on a walk, in a quiet room, and turn off all the noise. No podcast, no music, no news. In that silence, let one single thought take form: 'He loved me first.' Don't try to feel anything. Just let that truth ground you.
"Lord God, thank You for moving first. Thank You that our love is not a test we have to pass, but a gift You've already given. We claim that freedom today. When we feel empty and exhausted, remind us that Your love is the source, not our effort. Help us to live like people who are responding to love, not trying to earn it. In Jesus' name... Amen."

“Loving Second.” This phrase lingers. The philautia— self-love — is so deeply ingrained, even in our acts of generosity. To genuinely love *deuteros, second, requires a profound emptying, a *kenosisof the will. Maximus the Confessor speaks much of this struggle against the passions, towards true dispossession. It is a work for a lifetime. Still wrestling with its demands.

Man, that ‘loving second’ idea? That’s it right there. Always tryna be first, chasing that shine, it just drains you, you know what I mean? Real talk. The freedom in just holding it down, letting someone else step up. Freedom. Real freedom. Especially with the youth, gotta show them that. Less ego, more love for the squad. 🔥 Big facts. No cap.

We love Him because He first loved us.1 John 4:19

John is explaining the origin of a Christian's love for God. He's making a simple but profound point about cause and effect. The verse isn't describing an achievement or a transaction. It's explaining where our ability to love God comes from in the first place.

The idea is that our love for God doesn't start with us. It's a response, an echo of a love that was already there. Think of a planet reflecting the sun's light—it has no light of its own. In the same way, any real love we have for God is a gift He planted and nourished in us. It's not a feeling we can work up on our own; it's the direct result of His love for us.
