Luke's Witness: From Hearing to Seeing God's Shelter
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Another day, another chance to mark the ground. Welcome. This morning, I felt the cold tile on my bare feet as I stumbled towards the coffee machine, the only sound the quiet hum of the brewer. That first sip, before the world wakes up, always feels like a deep breath, a moment to reorient before the day's current pulls you. It's your daily invitation to abide, to find something true to anchor to.
And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. — Luke 2:20The Briefing
Luke records a beautiful scene here, where shepherds, fresh from a divine encounter, returned to their everyday lives with full hearts. They were glorifying and praising God because what they had heard and what they had seen matched up exactly, just as it had been promised. If I’m being real, this idea of what’s heard lining up with what’s seen is just pure oxygen for a tired soul. We live in a world that constantly bombards us with noise, pulling us off course, leaving us wondering if anything is truly stable. It feels like the digital cleanse trend, where we need special tools just to protect us from our other tools – a clear signal that our inner compass is constantly battling external interference. This passage is a steady hand on a shaking shoulder, a reminder that there’s a consistent reality we can trace. Just like when you’re out on the water, you need to know your true north. Ignoring that internal check engine light, those little nudges toward truth, can lead to bigger problems down the line. We can try to keep sailing, always fighting against the current from the stern, but if we don't adjust our bow to the true direction, we’re just expending energy. Luke's words highlight a profound sense of satisfaction: the shepherds found their experience of God was even richer than what they'd been told. It's not just intellectual agreement; it's a deep, visceral 'yes' to the truth that Jesus is real and His promises hold.
⚔️ Your Mission
I have a challenge for you today. Just like checking your compass to ensure your bow is pointing true, dedicate a short, intentional period—even just five minutes—to a single conversation with someone today. Put your phone completely away, out of sight and out of mind, and give them your full, undivided attention, really listening without distraction. Maybe that looks like leaving your device on the stern of your kitchen counter while you talk to a family member or coworker, offering them your full presence."Let’s go to the throne... Father, we confess how tightly we grip the need for control, for clarity, for every step mapped out. We offer You our anxieties, the constant hum of 'what if' in our minds. Help us to open our hands and surrender our need to navigate every current, trusting that Your divine compass will guide our stern. Dear Lord, In Jesus' name... Amen."

You see it in the good plans, in folks looking out for each other. That’s where God shows up, keeping things from falling apart. Helps me slow down. Notice the foundations we’re actually laying. 👍

That Luke devotional, “Hearing to Seeing God’s Shelter”… it truly sat with me. Honey, that picture of the hen gathering her chicks under her wings, it’s not just a pretty thought. It’s a living truth. With all the noise, the hurried footsteps of the young ones rushing off to school, the worries of their mamas trying to make ends meet… sometimes it feels like we’re just out there, exposed.
But then I remember. The Lord is my shepherd. He keeps us. It’s in the way Sister Mary checks on those new folks, or how we pull together for the food drive. That’s God’s shelter right there, unfolding before our very eyes. Won’t He do it? He reminds us to just look for His goodness, even when things feel scattered. Always a refuge.
