The Downward Path to Lasting Honor

    July 28, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Ready to build the witness today? Good to have you. I'll make a confession. You know those nights when you can't sleep because your brain is running a thousand different worst-case scenarios? It's like we become the lead scout for our own potential disasters, trying to map out every threat. We tell ourselves it's planning, that it's responsible. But honestly? It's a desperate attempt to grab control over things we were never meant to carry. It's a quiet, exhausting pride.

Before honour is humility. — Proverbs 15:33

    The Briefing

Solomon gives us one of those lines that’s so simple, we can almost miss the punch. He’s basically saying that the path to being lifted up starts with getting low. But here's where it gets real.. this isn't about God demanding we grovel. It's about His protection. The truth is, God blesses us to the absolute fullest measure that is safe for us. If we don't have a blessing we're asking for, it might be because He knows our unhumbled spirit would take the credit. He knows we'd win the victory in His name and then quietly try to pilfer the crown for ourselves. It’s not a punishment, it's His mercy. He's keeping us low for our own safety, preventing a fall we can't yet see. This whole pattern, this growing downwards to grow upwards, is written into the DNA of the gospel. Think about it. Jesus descended that He might ascend. He emptied himself, took the form of a servant, and was given the name that is above every name. He showed us the strategy: true honor, the kind that lasts, isn't seized. It’s received on the other side of surrender. We can't advance on our own terms. The kingdom of heaven has a completely inverted physics. So when we're up at night, trying to scout every possible negative outcome, running scenarios we can't control.. what are we really doing? We're trying to earn honor. We're trying to secure our own victory. But this verse invites us into a profound rest. It tells us to stop striving and start stooping. To empty our hands of our own plans so God can fill them with His love. Seriously, the generosity of God in that is almost disorienting. He’s not waiting for us to climb up to Him. He’s waiting for us to be humble enough to let Him lift us.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Here is your assignment... Humility means getting out of our own way so we can see someone else's need. It’s an act of surrender. Here is the practical step: Set a timer for five minutes today. Pick one person in your life who is facing a battle. For those five minutes, stand watch for them in prayer. Don't pray for yourself. Just for them. By name. That's the mission.
"Heavenly Father, we confess we spend so much energy trying to climb, trying to secure our own honor and safety. But Your Word promises that the way up is down. We claim that promise right now. Teach us how to grow downwards, to find our strength in humility, not in our own striving. Help us to gladly lay down the crown we keep trying to place on our own heads, and to rest in the honor that only You can give. Let us find our safety there. In Jesus' name... Amen."

“The Downward Path to Lasting Honor” – this totally connects with what Pastor Mike was saying about servant leadership last week. So timely for setting intentions after my workout. Seriously, sharing this!
