The Strange Command That Declares You Clean
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
It's Monday. You're on another one of those video calls. A grid of faces, some paying attention, some not. And then there’s that one person who never turns their camera on,just a name in a black box. We all kind of wonder what’s going on over there. But let's be real, we're all curating, right? We pick the camera angle that hides the mess of laundry. We put on the right expression. We perform 'okay.' We show the clean parts. But what if the most honest state isn't a clean room, but a black screen that just admits: it's a mess over here.
Behold, if the leprosy have covered all his flesh, he shall pronounce him clean that hath the plague. — Leviticus 13:13The Briefing
It's one of the strangest laws in the entire Old Testament. It feels completely backward. The priest examines someone with a skin disease. If there's a single healthy spot on them, they're declared unclean. But if the disease has covered their entire body, from head to foot, with not one clean patch left, then, and only then, the priest must pronounce them clean. Here’s the thing, this isn't just about ancient hygiene. It’s a spiritual X-ray for us. Our religious muscle memory is to manage our image. We work so hard to present at least one 'clean spot' to God, to our friends, to ourselves. We say, 'Look, I know this part of my life is a mess, but I'm doing pretty good over here.' We think that one healthy patch is what keeps us in the game. God says that one hidden, unconfessed, self-righteous spot is the most dangerous thing about us. Hidden sin is the true leprosy. It's the pretending that kills us. But when the infection comes to the surface, when we finally stop hiding and admit we're covered in it, that we have no righteousness of our own, that’s the moment we’re pronounced clean. That is the ground floor where grace begins. It's not a failure to be found out; it's freedom. Stripping comes before clothing. A complete awareness of our sin isn't something to run from; it’s one of the first and clearest signs of God's grace at work in a heart. The very thing that feels like our deepest shame is the symptom of a hopeful state. It’s the point where we get our second wind, not from our own strength, but from His declaration over us. He's not waiting for us to get better. He's waiting for us to get honest.
⚔️ Your Mission
Tonight, call a timeout thirty minutes earlier than you planned. Don't finish the dishes, don't clear the inbox, don't tie up every loose end. Surrender the day unfinished, as an act of faith. Admitting you don't have to be totally 'clean' before you can rest, that is the mission. If that's not your battle: before you sleep tonight, name the one thing you're trying to fix or hide. Say it out loud to God, just once: 'This is a mess, and it's Yours.' Then be silent."Dear Lord, we're tired of performing. We spend so much energy trying to hide the mess. Thank You that Your grace meets us there, not after we've cleaned ourselves up. Help us believe we are clean simply because You say so. Quiet the voice that tells us we have to be better first. In Jesus' name... Amen."Tomorrow’s Eb, in your inboxOne short devotional each morning, audio included. Unsubscribe any time.

But “Strange Command” totally caught my eye. Real talk, trying to keep my house “clean” with two little ones feels like a strange command sometimes, ha. No joke. It’s like, you get a weird spec for a project and you just gotta trust the process will make it work, you know? Like, trusting that declaration. That’s fire. Makes you think.
You don't have to carry it alone.

### What Leviticus 13:13 actually says
God is giving Israel's priests a set of rules for handling skin diseases, which the Bible calls leprosy. This verse gives a surprising instruction: under one specific circumstance, a person totally covered in the disease was to be declared clean.
This rule sounds backward, but it had a clear purpose. A disease that covered the whole body was a sign that the person's constitution was sound enough to push it all out. The spiritual picture is that hidden, unconfessed sin is the real danger. It’s only when we stop claiming any "clean spots" of our own righteousness and see ourselves as completely sinful that God declares us clean.

Just pulled into carpool line, sticky hands everywhere, and reading this… Yes Lord! Declared clean even when my kitchen floor begs to differ. Can I get a witness? Amen!
