🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

So, I was scrolling through my phone last night and an old photo popped up. It was from a friend's wedding, maybe ten years ago. We all look so young, so sure of things. And then it hits you, that dull ache. Half the people in that smiling group, you don't even talk to anymore. Life happened. And it just leaves this feeling, this longing for something that feels whole again.

They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of Thy house. — Psalm 36:8

    The Briefing

Honestly, most of the time, I think we’d settle for crumbs. I know I would. Just a little something to get by. We tell ourselves that we can't be greedy with God. We come to Him like the woman in the Gospels, saying, 'even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the master's table.' It feels humble, right? To expect the leftovers. To just hope for the scraps from the back door of grace. But the psalmist here just blows that whole idea apart. The promise isn't for scraps. It's for 'fatness.' It's for being 'abundantly satisfied.' That's not the language of leftovers. That's the language of a feast. It's the best cut, the richest part, the meal you talk about for weeks. And it's not just a taste, it's satisfaction. Deep, soul-level fullness that leaves no room for emptiness. Think about this. God spreads a table not for one person, but for a host as countless as the stars. And He does it every single day. We show up hungry. We show up thirsty. Some days feel like a hard scramble up a cliff face. We fall into a ravine of doubt. We get a blister on our soul from the constant rubbing of the world against our hope. And what does He offer us? Not just enough to make it through the hike. He offers a banquet. This is the hospitality of the God of grace. He doesn't just tolerate us at His table; He prepares the best for us. Like Mephibosheth, the forgotten, broken grandson of a disgraced king, we are invited to eat at the King's own table. Not for a night. forever. We get Benjamin's portion, ten times more than we could ever expect. Because His mercy isn't about meeting our minimums. It's about displaying His abundant, overwhelming, marvelous plenty.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

God's provision is for our whole person, not just our spirit. So let's honor the body He gave us. Sometime today, step away from your work for five solid minutes and just walk. No phone, no podcast. Just your feet on the ground. If you can't get away, just stand up, roll your shoulders back, and take three deep, slow breaths. Receive the simple gift of a body that works. It's a small way to say thank you for a feast we didn't earn.
"Father, we confess we've gotten used to asking for crumbs. We've expected leftovers because we know what we deserve. But Your word promises a feast. It promises satisfaction. And today, we choose to believe You. We claim our seat at Your table, not because we're worthy, but because You are extravagantly good. Fill the emptiness in us with the fatness of Your house. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Reading that… got me thinking about the dented cans we sell for a dollar less at the store, you know? How some folks gotta take those ‘cause that’s all they can swing. Makes you feel… like you’re just getting the scraps, I reckon. But to think God, he don’t do that. Don’t give out the dented, just the good stuff. Lord help me, that’s a different way to think about things.

“The God Who Serves No Scraps.” Yep. That is it. Just thinking about a talk I had with one of my crew, young Mark. He was ready to cut a corner. Told him, “Do it right, or don’t do it at all, son.” Top-shelf work, top-shelf materials. Same for how God treats us, and how we ought to treat folks. No leftovers. 👍

You don't have to carry it alone.

They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of Thy house.Psalm 36:8

This verse uses the image of a massive banquet. It's a picture of God hosting a feast for his people in his own house. The idea is one of overwhelming hospitality, far more generous than anything even a great king could provide for his guests.

The word “fatness” sounds strange to us, but it simply meant the richest, most satisfying food—the best part of the meal. To be "abundantly satisfied" means being filled beyond your expectations. This isn't about getting leftovers. It’s about every guest receiving a huge portion of the very best God has to offer.

In modern English, the line reads: "They feast on the abundance of your house."
