The Cross We Don't Carry Alone
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Ready to build the witness today? Good to have you. You know that feeling at the end of a long day of video calls? Everyone does that little performative wave, the screens go black, and then.. silence. And the exhaustion just hits you like a wave. It's not just physical tiredness. It's the weight of performing, of holding it all together, of carrying on when your body is screaming for a break. That feeling is real ground. It's where the work begins.
On him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. — Luke 23:26The Briefing
Luke shows us this moment with Simon of Cyrene, a man just pulled from the crowd, and on him they laid the cross. The key words are right there, that he might bear it after Jesus. I keep turning this one over in my mind. Jesus doesn't just eliminate our suffering. He doesn't bulldoze the road ahead so it's smooth and easy. He bears His cross, not so we can escape ours, but so we have a model for how to endure it. He exempts us from the eternal penalty of sin, but not from the present reality of sorrow. Stay with me here.. this isn't bad news. It's the blueprint for real freedom. Because the text implies it's Christ's cross we end up carrying. When you're exhausted from trying to love difficult people, when your integrity costs you something at work, when the simple weight of being a decent human in a broken world feels like too much, that isn't some random, personal failure. It is, in a way, His cross. And here's the thing: we're only asked to carry one end of it. The lighter end. Christ has already gone ahead, His shoulder marked the wood, and He is bearing the impossible, crushing part of the load. We're invited into a partnership. We become a load-bearing part of the structure, but He is, and always will be, the foundation. This reframes our exhaustion, doesn't it? That weariness isn't a sign we've taken a wrong turn and ended up in the breakdown lane of the soul. It's the ache that reminds us we're following. We are participating in something real. And the one we follow has already carried the worst of it all the way across the threshold of home.
⚔️ Your Mission
Let's make this practical... Today, you're going to feel that craving to just check out, to escape the weight you're carrying. When it hits, pivot. Picture yourself doing this: Stop, name the specific weight out loud, 'This meeting,' 'this difficult conversation,' 'this financial stress', and say to God, 'I can't carry this alone. You have the heavy end.' Let that be your act of partnership today."Almighty God, we confess we try to be heroes. We try to carry the whole cross ourselves, and we wonder why we're so crushed and exhausted. Forgive us for forgetting the partnership You offer. Teach us to feel the weight on our shoulders not as a burden of loneliness, but as a reminder of Your presence just ahead of us. Help us to gladly take up the lighter end, knowing You are strong enough for the rest. In Jesus' name... Amen."

This part about not having to carry it all by yourself… that makes me think. Sometimes it feels like you gotta lift everything, every single bit, for the kids and all. Like, Lord help me, I just wish someone would say ‘here, let me get that’ sometimes, you know? Makes you wonder if God really does… I don’t know, maybe not lift it, but sit with you while you do.
You don't have to carry it alone.

### What Luke 23:26 actually says
As Roman soldiers led Jesus to be crucified, they pulled a man named Simon of Cyrene out of the crowd. This verse describes the moment they forced Simon to carry Jesus's cross for him, making him walk behind Jesus on the way to the execution.
This event is understood as a picture of the Christian life. Following Jesus doesn't mean an escape from suffering, but an invitation to endure it alongside him. The trials someone faces for their faith aren't their own burden, but Christ's. He walks ahead, and he's sharing the load—in fact, he's carrying the heavier end of the cross.

This concept of “the cross we don’t carry alone”… that’s just a game-changer perspective. We’re so conditioned to grind it out solo, thinking strength means independence. But it’s actually about being grounded in connection. Exactly what Pastor Ben highlighted in our latest series on belonging – that real strength is found in acknowledging our shared humanity and Christ’s support. Honestly, after that client call last Tuesday, where everything just completely spun out, it felt like a solo burden. But then you remember that intentional community, that divine partnership, is the foundation. Sharing this thought. So needed to hear this today.
