Matthew on the Fidelity That Outlasts Our Fear

    July 09, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Back for your daily touchstone? I love to see it. Ever have the Wi-Fi die in the middle of a song? The music stops, the screen goes blank, and a silence you didn't choose rushes in. Suddenly you can hear the clock ticking on the wall. And in that quiet, the thought lands: I thought I’d be further along by now. There's a particular shame to feeling like you're behind schedule on your own life. It’s a heavy, hollow feeling.

Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled. — Matthew 26:56

    The Briefing

That verse doesn't flinch. And honestly, neither should we. Matthew, who was right there, gives it to us straight. No spin. No excuses. They all ran. The inner circle, the ones who promised to die with Him, gone. Every last one. And that's where the text flips the script on our own sense of failure. Because this moment reveals something unshakable about god. His plan was never dependent on their perfection. His love was never conditional on their loyalty. Jesus knew this moment was coming. He knew He'd be alone. And He walked toward it anyway. The anguish of their abandonment was a real and bitter ingredient in the cup He had to drink, but He still drank it. He faced the cross alone so we would never have to face judgment alone. That's not just grace, that's a divine defiance against the power of our own weakness. We know this feeling, right? We make promises to God, to our families, to ourselves. We think we're strong enough for the hike. Then we get a spiritual blister two miles in and realize how weak we actually are. We look at our lives and think we should be at the summit by now, but we're still grinding up a painful switchback. This verse is a true north for human nature: left to ourselves, we will eventually run. But hear me on this: our failure is never the final word. These same men who fled became the lions of the early church. Not because they tried harder, but because they were filled with a power that wasn't their own. The Holy Spirit can make cowards brave. God isn't surprised by our weakness; He's ready to build His strength right in the middle of it. The friction we feel isn't a sign of disqualification. It's the place where healing begins.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Let's make this practical... We often flee our primary callings not in one big leap, but in a thousand tiny 'yeses' to things that don't matter. Let's get concrete: Today, say a sacred 'no' to one thing that's draining your energy away from what truly matters. It could be a meeting, a mindless scroll, or an obligation you accepted out of guilt. Free up that space to stand your ground.
"Let’s talk to the Father... Dear Lord, we confess we are just like them. We make promises and then our fear gets the better of us. We run. Thank You that Your love for us was never based on our ability to stand firm. You stood firm for us. Heal the shame that tells us we're too far gone. Help us surrender our self-reliance and the blisters it causes, and walk in the strength that only Your Spirit can provide. Let us lean on You today. In Jesus' name... Amen."

That idea of something outlasting fear… there’s a quiet strength in it.

It brings me back to the moss on the cedars after the rain this morning. That deep, almost luminous green that just *holdsits colour, even when the sky is all muted grey.

A steadfast presence. Not loud, but so true. ✨ Keeps coming back to me.

Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.Matthew 26:56

This happens at the very start of Jesus's suffering, right after he's been arrested. His disciples are with him, and they've all promised they would rather die than abandon him.

Despite their promises, a sudden panic grips them. This verse describes how, in a moment of cowardly fear for their own lives, every single one of them deserted Jesus. They scattered like sheep when a wolf attacks. The irony is that they ran from the only one who could have kept them safe, leaving him to face what was coming completely alone.
