The Cry That Secured Our Place
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Let’s take a breath. It is really good to see you here. I've got this old key in a junk drawer. It doesn't open anything anymore. The lock is gone, the house is sold, but I keep the key. And honestly? Sometimes it feels like that's who we are. We feel defined by a door that's now closed,a loss, a failure, a past that shaped us so much we're not sure who we are without it. We're holding a key to a life that doesn't exist anymore, and the feeling is one of being locked out. Permanently.
My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me? — Psalm 22:1The Briefing
Some verses are a comfort. This one is a confrontation. These words are maybe the most terrifying in all of Scripture. And they were spoken by Jesus, from the cross. The Psalmist is giving us the language for our own darkest moments. But when Jesus cries these words out, it’s something else entirely. He isn't just feeling forsaken. He is forsaken. For us, when the clouds roll in and we can’t feel God’s presence, it’s a seeming separation. He is still there. We just can't see the sun. But for Christ on the cross, this was a real forsaking. A dreadful fact. God the Father actually turned His face away. It was the only way to deal with the sin He carried. Think about that. The one perfect, unbroken relationship in the history of the universe experienced an absolute fracture. That was the cost. An agony so acute we can't begin to measure it. He was experiencing the full spiritual weight of our sin, which is total separation from God. And here’s the unbelievable mercy in it, because He experienced the reality of being forsaken, we never will. His cry from that cross wasn't the beginning of our abandonment. It was the end of it. It was the sound of our debt being paid in the only currency that mattered: perfect relationship, broken for us. So when we feel that ache of loneliness, that sense that a door has closed forever and we’re locked out, we have to remember the cross. Our pain is real. The ache is valid. But it is not the final word. The final word is a cry that purchased our belonging. The scar from that moment is our guarantee that even in the deepest darkness, we are never, ever truly alone.
⚔️ Your Mission
Here is how we walk this out... The cry of loneliness is answered by the ministry of presence. So today, your mission is to create a moment of true fellowship. Share a meal with someone, your family, a friend, a roommate, and put the phones away. Completely away. No screens on the table, no notifications. Just faces and food and the quiet grace of being together. Counter the noise of absence with the practice of presence."Jesus, we thank you. We thank you for crying out so that we could be brought in. Thank you for enduring the ultimate fracture, the real turning away of the Father,so that we would never be truly forsaken. In our moments of acute pain, when we feel utterly alone, help us to remember the cross. Let the scar of that day be the sign that Your presence is our promise. Help us to live like we belong to You, because we do. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Read the records of the community below.ClaireAugust 20, 2026There’s something about how a profound sound, a deep letting go, can make everything feel so incredibly still. Like the quiet after a heavy rain, when the whole world seems to breathe out. Saw that soft grey light this morning, walking. Everything feels rooted, held. That quiet holding. ✨

My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me?Psalm 22:1
These are the words of Jesus on the cross. It’s the moment of his deepest agony at Calvary. His suffering was total—a combination of physical torture, the shame of public execution, and a spiritual horror that topped them both: the Father’s presence departing.
This cry from the cross was a statement of fact. For a time, God the Father had genuinely turned His face away from the Son. While we might feel like God has forsaken us, He never actually does. For Christ, the separation was real, and the agony was beyond what we can imagine.
In modern English, this cry reads, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

Man, just barely squeezed this in after soccer practice, chaos right now. Legit almost skipped it completely. But that whole “secured our place” thing? Real talk, that is fire. Kinda like when you get final approval on a project, no more changes. Done deal. Makes the whole… you know, the rest of the week’s stuff feel a little less impossible. Just knowing that part’s locked down.
