Matthew on the Peace That Starts a Fight
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Take a quick breath with me. Picture this: you're in the doctor's waiting room. They're running forty-five minutes behind. The chair is uncomfortable, the magazines are three years old, and a low-grade irritation is starting to build behind your eyes. It's a tiny thing, but in that moment, the internal battle for peace is very, very real. We wrestle for calm over such small things. So how are we supposed to be people of peace in a world on fire?
Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. — Matthew 5:9The Briefing
Let's be honest, this beatitude can feel like it's for a different kind of person. The calm person. The one who never raises their voice. But Jesus's words here aren't about a personality type, they're about an identity. He says the peacemakers will be called children of god. Why? Because they look like their Father. But here's the part we miss. The verse right before this one blesses the pure in heart. The order is everything. It's 'first pure, then peaceable.' This isn't about slapping a polite smile on top of real conflict. It's not about making a rotten situation look tidy. That's not peace, that's just avoidance. Real peacemaking refuses to make a deal with what's wrong. It stands for what's holy first. It has a backbone. Think about it this way. A real, lasting peace can't be grafted onto a sick root. It won't take. We have to be connected to the true source of peace,Christ Himself, before we have any to give. We're just a sapling on our own, easily knocked over by the first argument at work or the tension at the dinner table. But when our peace comes from Him, we can grow to provide a canopy for others, a place of shelter in the noise. And here’s the urgent truth of it. This work isn't safe. Jesus Himself, the Prince of Peace, brought a sword of division. His presence forced a choice. And the verse right after this one? It blesses those who are persecuted. Making real peace often means starting a necessary conflict with the false peace of the world. Don't be surprised if your efforts to bring God's order into a situation are met with resistance. You're not doing it for a thank-you card. You're doing it because it's your family business.
⚔️ Your Mission
Alright, let's put this into practice. You can't export a peace you don't possess. The work has to start inside. So for five minutes today, find a quiet spot with no phone, no music, nothing. Just sit in the silence and let the noise settle. If that's not possible today, then on your drive, turn off the radio for the last five minutes of the trip. We're making a quiet space for God's peace to take root before we try to give it away."Lord God, thank you that Your peace isn't just an idea, but a person,Jesus. Thank you that He made the final peace for us on the cross, a peace we could never make for ourselves. Thank you that our identity as your children is secure in what He did, not in how calm we feel today. Give us the courage to be 'first pure, then peaceable' in a world that settles for less. Let that truth anchor us. In Jesus' name... Amen."Tomorrow’s Eb, in your inboxOne short devotional each morning, audio included. Unsubscribe any time.

Read the records of the community below.RogerOctober 20, 2026“Peace that starts a fight”—initially, that feels like a conditional statement with an error. Peace, by definition, is an absence of conflict. But in a fallen system, true peace, reconciliation with the source, often exposes and demands confrontation with the *falsepeace. That tracks. It’s a necessary diagnostic step. Worth sitting with that paradigm shift.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.Matthew 5:9
Jesus says this near the start of his Sermon on the Mount. It's the seventh of his famous "Beatitudes," or blessings. To his Jewish audience, the number seven was important. It was their number for perfection, so this blessing would have stood out as something that gets close to a complete life in God.
The verse's position is key to understanding it. It comes right after the blessing for the "pure in heart," which sets the order: purity first, then peace. This isn't about making peace by tolerating what's wrong. It's also right before the blessing for the persecuted. Jesus makes it clear that this kind of peacemaking often leads to being misunderstood and rejected, just as he was.

This idea of a peace that holds an edge… There is something about it that feels true.
Like the quiet stillness right after a heavy rain here, when the light is a washed-out silver, almost sharp. Not a soft, sleepy peace. More a deep settling that asks something from you.
I saw it this morning walking the sea wall.
