The Prayer God Keeps on File

    October 18, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Hey there. Let's take two minutes. You ever pull a jacket out of the closet from last fall, and it still has the faint smell of a campfire on it? It’s a ghost of the warmth, a reminder of something that was real. Sometimes faith can feel like that. We remember the fire, but right now, all we have is the cold smell of smoke. We're in a long season, and the hardest part is not knowing when, or if, it will end.

I called Him, but He gave me no answer. — Song of Songs 5:6

    The Briefing

That feeling of calling out into an empty room. The words hang in the air and then just… fall. The bride in this passage is describing that exact moment. 'I called Him,' she says, 'but He gave me no answer.' It’s maybe the most honest sentence in the whole book about the struggle of faith. Because we’ve all been there. We’ve all sent up a prayer that felt like it hit a brass ceiling and echoed back down, unanswered. And in that silence, a story starts to form in our heads. A story that says God is distant, or disappointed, or just plain gone. That He doesn't hear, or maybe worse, that He hears and doesn't care. But that's not the story the rest of Scripture tells. The ancient teachers had a different view of this silence. They taught that delay is not denial. That God sometimes lets us wait, not to punish us, but to exercise our patience, to deepen our faith. Think about that. The waiting itself is the work. He's not ignoring us, He's sculpting us in the silence. And here’s the most defiant truth of all: unanswered prayers are not unheard prayers. God keeps a file. There's an archive in heaven where every single petition is treasured. He has, the old writers said, a tear-bottle for our grief and a book where our holy groanings are recorded. Nothing is lost. Not one word. The silence we feel is not a sign of His absence, but an invitation to trust His timing. His long-dated bills, as one old preacher put it, will be punctually honored. He will answer. It just won't be on our schedule. And our job in the waiting is to stand our ground against the lie that He's forgotten us. He hasn't. He's just working on a timeline we can't see.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Here’s one specific thing we can do before the day gets away. Say no to one thing today that feels urgent but isn't truly important. Decline the meeting. Let the email wait. Let that empty space on your calendar be a physical act of waiting on God, not just filling the noise. If that's not your situation, try this: audit your phone's notifications. Turn off the alerts for one app that steals your peace. This is how we practice trusting His timing, by making our own world a little quieter.
"Jesus, we bring before You that one person. The one whose face just came to our mind. You know their name, and you know the silence they're sitting in right now. Be present with them in a way they can feel. Quiet the noise in their life, and in ours, so we can learn to trust Your presence even when we can't hear Your voice. Help us to wait well, knowing You haven't forgotten. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Ah now, this one caught my eye this morning, reading it with my second cup of Barry’s. Just after the news was telling us all the troubles of the world, you see. But the idea of God keeping our prayers, quiet little whispers and all, on file? That’s just brilliant altogether, isn’t it? Brings such a comfort to a tired old soul. Makes you think of all those Rosaries said over the years, not a single one gone to waste, even the ones where my mind might have wandered a bit! God is good, always remembering us in His favour. Takes the worry out of things, truly.

    God bless, Mary

Yep. That ‘on file’ part… makes you think about what really counts. Had a talk with young Mark on the site yesterday about how your actions are the real prayer folks see. Not just the words. Anyone can talk big. It’s the daily work, the neighbour helping out, that’s what God keeps a record of. Simple as that.

You don't have to carry it alone.

I called Him, but He gave me no answer.Song of Songs 5:6

In this part of the story, the bride calls out for her beloved, but he’s gone. She looks for him and calls his name, but all she gets back is silence. This moment is a picture of a prayer that seems to go completely unanswered.

That silence isn't a "no." It's a delay. Sometimes God tests and strengthens a person's faith by making them wait for an answer. It doesn't mean the prayer was unheard or rejected. It just means God works on His own timeline. He keeps a record of every prayer, and while the answer may be delayed, it isn't denied.
