The Prayer That Holds You Back From Yourself

    June 18, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Glad you're here. Ever have one of those moments of quiet satisfaction? You finished the big project, you navigated the tough conversation, you finally got a win after a long stretch of trying. There's this low hum of 'I did it.' And honestly? It feels good. But here’s the question that’s been sitting with me: what if the biggest spiritual danger isn’t found in our failures, but in the subtle pride of our successes?

Keep back Thy servant also from presumptuous sins. — Psalm 19:13

    The Briefing

The Psalmist is asking God for something really specific here. He’s basically saying, 'Lord, hold me back from the sins I would otherwise choose. The ones I’d walk right into with my eyes wide open.' These aren't the mistakes we make when we're tired or trip up by accident. These are presumptuous sins, the ones born out of arrogance, the ones that come when we think we know better. And here's what that prayer shows us about God, He is a God who holds us back. His grace isn't just a safety net for when we fall; it's a bridle for when we're about to run. He doesn't just wait at the bottom of the cliff to patch us up. He stands at the edge and says, 'Not this way.' Think about that. His faithfulness is active, protective, and preventative. He knows the tinder that's packed into our hearts, just waiting for a spark of pride to set it ablaze. Stay with me here.. because this is for everyone. This was the prayer of a man described as being 'after God's own heart.' If he needed to be kept back, what does that say about us? It means no amount of experience, no string of victories, no spiritual maturity ever graduates us from the need for God to hold the reins. The roots of self-reliance run deep, and sometimes they look an awful lot like strength. We accomplish something good, we feel that quiet satisfaction, and we think, 'I've got this.' And right there, that's the precipice. The most dangerous ground is often the ground we feel most confident on. This prayer isn't an admission of failure; it’s an act of profound wisdom. It’s looking at our own capacity and saying, 'I don't trust it.' It’s asking God to manage us, because He is always a better manager of our lives than we are. It’s the constant, daily need to hand Him the reins before we even leave the stable.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

So, what do we do with this? It's about letting God hold the reins, even in the small things. Try this: Tonight, surrender the day before it's done. Don't push until you're exhausted. Intentionally put the phone down, close the laptop, and get in bed 15 minutes earlier than you normally would. Let that small act of being kept back be your prayer, a physical trust that God can handle the rest.
"Heavenly Father, we confess how quickly we trust our own hands, especially after a victory. We feel competent, strong, and in control, and forget that it's all from You. Forgive us for our self-confidence. Please, put the bridle on our pride and hold us back from the sins we would choose for ourselves. Keep us close to Your wisdom and far from our own foolishness. Guide us and protect us from ourselves. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Whew! That title alone… a prayer holding me back? Yes Lord! Just wrestled a toddler into naptime, trying to hold myself back from eating all the goldfish crackers. So real. Can I get a witness?

Keep back Thy servant also from presumptuous sins.Psalm 19:13

This is a prayer from David. He's asking God to physically hold him back, like someone pulling the reins on a horse that's about to bolt. The danger he's worried about isn't from the outside—it's the powerful urge to sin that he recognizes inside himself.

The phrase "presumptuous sins" refers to the most serious kind of wrongdoing. These aren't sins of ignorance or weakness. They're willful, deliberate acts—the things we do when we know better but choose to sin anyway.

In plain language, David is praying, "God, stop me from committing the sins I would knowingly choose."
