Psalm 39 and the Relief of Not Belonging

    June 17, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Morning. Or afternoon. Whenever you are, I’m glad we’re connecting. Remember when getting truly lost was still a possibility? Before GPS on every phone, you could take a wrong turn and suddenly be in a place you didn't recognize at all. There was that unique feeling of being an outsider, a stranger who didn't know the local rules. Some seasons of life feel just like that, not because you're on the wrong road, but because you're trying to live a certain way, and the world itself just seems to resist. That resistance can wear you down, and make you feel like you just don't belong here.

    I am a stranger with thee. — Psalm 39:12

    The Briefing

When the Psalmist says he’s a stranger, he’s not just talking about feeling a little lonely. He’s basically saying, 'I don’t belong here, and I'm with You in that.' And here’s what gets me, this isn’t a complaint. It’s a declaration. A statement of identity. Because God Himself is a stranger in His own world. Think about that. The world He made forgets Him, dishonors Him, sets up its own rules and alien customs. His own Son came to His own home, and His own people didn't recognize Him. So God is not distant from our feeling of not belonging. He’s the origin of it. He is our fellow-pilgrim, our fellow-sufferer. But there's a deeper current running here.. The loneliness, the feeling of being out of step with the culture around you, that isn't a sign that you're failing. It’s often a sign that His pierced hand has loosened the cords that once tied you to this world. Your speech, your priorities, your hope, it can all seem strange to a world that runs on a different operating system. It's like we're caught in the gravitational pull of a different sun, in a completely different orbit from everyone else. Of course we feel different. We're looking at a different horizon. And honestly? That pressure you feel to conform, to just blend in and not make waves, it’s real. It can be exhausting to feel like you’re managing something that constantly resists you. But this verse offers the most profound comfort. It’s the comfort of knowing you’re not a stranger to Him, but a stranger with Him. He’s right there in the strangeness with you. He is the one constant in a foreign land. And that, that is the truth that can ground you, no matter how strange the territory gets.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Let's make this practical... Here is the practical step: Think of one person in your life who seems isolated or on the outside. Your mission isn't to fix them, but simply to be the 'with' for their 'stranger.' Reach out, show up, and just share the space with them today. Offer the quiet comfort of your presence.
"Lord God, thank you for not being a distant observer but a fellow-pilgrim who walks with us. Thank you that when we feel like strangers here, it's because our citizenship is actually with You. We are grateful that You are our comfort and our ground when everything else feels foreign. Let that truth be the firm place we stand today. In Jesus' name... Amen."

This world is not where we belong forever. Yes. Like good wood ready for another country. Our true home is with God.

Ah now, that idea of finding relief in *notbelonging, that really hits the mark. Was just having my second cup of Barry’s, listening to the morning news and thinking about dear Mrs. Murphy next door. Seems like the world’s gone a bit… well, different. Sometimes it feels like you’re out of step, doesn’t it? But finding comfort in that, knowing it’s a good sign, brilliant altogether. God is good.

    God bless, Mary

    ### What Psalm 39:12 actually says

This verse is a declaration made directly to God. The speaker sees himself as a pilgrim passing through a world that isn't his true home. Its culture and values feel alien to him, making him a stranger in a foreign land. His way of speaking, his manners, and his actions don't fit in.

The key to understanding this is the phrase "with thee." The speaker isn't a stranger *to* God—he's a stranger *with* God. He believes the world has forgotten God and even rejected Jesus. In this sense, God is also a stranger in his own world. The line expresses a shared experience: being an outsider, together.
