Solomon's Defiant War Cry of Spring
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Ready to build the witness today? Good to have you. It's late. You're the last one awake. The only sounds are the low hum of the refrigerator and the faint, rhythmic ticking of a wall clock you never notice until everything else is silent. And in that quiet, you feel it. The sheer exhaustion. You've been giving for so long you can't remember what it felt like to have something left over. It's not just tired. It’s a deep, soul-level winter. And you wonder if the warmth will ever come back.
The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land. — Song of Songs 2:12The Briefing
This verse from Solomon is more than just pretty poetry about a change in weather. It’s a defiant declaration about the character of God. It says that after a long, hard, and silent winter, spring always comes. The flowers appear. The birds start singing. Life returns. And here's the thing: we don't make it happen. We don't coax the flowers from the frozen ground or teach the birds their songs. It's a sovereign act. It's a promise kept. God is, by His very nature, a God of renewal. He doesn't just tolerate winter; He ends it. That is who He is. And that's where the text flips the script on our own exhaustion. That long, dreary winter is the state of a soul living at a distance from its maker. It's the coldness, the emptiness we feel when we've been running on our own strength for too long. But the gospel declares that the 'Sun of Righteousness', Jesus Christ, has already risen. His resurrection was the first flower breaking through the permanent winter of death. He is the unstoppable spring. The Holy Spirit is the warmth of that sun, sent to thaw our own chilly hearts, to make the hard, cracked clay of our souls pliable in the Potter's hands again. There’s a defiance to faith that we don't talk about enough. It's the choice to believe that this verse is true for us, right now. Even when all we feel is the cold. We can get so busy trying to manufacture our own springtime, right? A new productivity hack, a new diet, another book on burnout. But God isn't asking us to build the spring. He's asking us to notice its arrival. To lift our faces to a warmth that we did not create. To hoist the sail because a wind we did not summon has begun to blow. This isn't a call to hustle. It's a moment to breathe in grace and receive the life that is already pushing its way to the surface.
⚔️ Your Mission
Your move for today is simply this: End the winter of your own effort. Get in bed tonight before you're completely exhausted. Don't finish everything. Let the undone tasks be an offering, a quiet statement that you trust God to bring the morning, and the spring, without your anxious striving. Let go of the need to keep your own hands on the clay."Lord Jesus, we confess we are so tired. We've tried to force the flowers to grow in our own strength, and we've failed. We're weary of the cold, and we are weary of living at a distance from You. We're done pretending we can end this winter ourselves. So we ask: come, Holy Spirit. Renew our souls. Restore us. Let us hear the singing You've already started. In Jesus' name... Amen."

It’s like the way a sudden, bright green bursts from the grey after a long rain. The kind of green you see on new willow branches right now, almost violent in its insistence.
Been wrestling with some quiet things here. And that image… of pushing back, of making a sound that insists on life, feels so real. Like the tiny, brave shoots. Or the way the light catches a single drop on a leaf. ✨ A beautiful, fierce kind of presence.

The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.Song of Songs 2:12
This verse is part of an invitation. A man is calling to the woman he loves, asking her to come away with him. He paints a picture of spring arriving after a long, hard winter, showing her that a new and beautiful season has begun.
The imagery here points to a spiritual renewal. The flowers blooming are a picture of our own spiritual life waking up after a cold season. The birdsong is the sound of gratitude, and the turtledove's call represents the comforting feeling of peace returning to the soul.
The "turtle" in this verse isn't the reptile. It's a turtledove, a bird whose gentle cooing was a welcome sign that spring had truly come.
