The Command Jesus Gave Because He Knew You'd Forget

    September 07, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Let’s take a breath. It is really good to see you here. It’s late. Maybe you're the only one awake in the house. The blue glow of the phone is lighting up your face. You went to church this weekend. You sang the songs, you listened to the message, and you wanted to feel something, but mostly you just felt the effort of trying. And now, as Labor Day winds down and the reality of the fall grind sets in, there's just a quiet ache. A feeling of distance. It's not a crisis of faith. It's just.. drift. A slow, silent forgetting. And it feels lonely.

This do in remembrance of Me. — 1 Corinthians 11:24

    The Briefing

Okay but here's the part that wrecks me.. it seems impossible that we could forget. Right? That those of us rescued by the blood of Jesus, loved with a love that has no beginning and no end, could just… forget Him. But if we’re being honest with ourselves, it’s not just possible. It’s our default setting. Conscience says it’s true. This command from Jesus isn’t the request of a needy God, insecure and demanding our attention. This is the loving provision of a Savior who knows us perfectly. He knows the constant turmoil of the world. He knows about the mortgage payment, the back-to-school scramble, the endless notifications. He knows these things act like weeds, choking out the rose of Sharon in our hearts. And He knows we need a physical, tangible anchor to pull us back. The command to 'remember' is an act of grace. It’s a lifeline. It's Jesus saying, 'I know your heart will drift. I know the noise will get loud. Here is a way back to Me.' He’s not just asking for mental recall. He's inviting us into an act that re-calibrates our entire being. It’s an invitation to let the memory of His sacrifice have a deeper resonance than the day's anxieties. It's an act of spiritual amplification, turning His signal up so it drowns out the static. We don't remember to keep God happy. We remember to keep ourselves sane. We remember because in the remembering, we find who we are again. We find our peace again. We find our hope again. It’s not another rule on a long list. It's the rescue mission for a forgetful heart.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Let's put this into practice... this isn't just about thoughts; it's about the physical space we inhabit. Consider this an act of intentional remembrance today. Find the object that most represents your distraction or anxiety, your phone, your laptop, a stack of bills. For just fifteen minutes, physically move it out of your sight. In its place, set one simple thing that reminds you of Christ's faithfulness. A cross, a rock, even just a handwritten note. Let the physical act of swapping them re-tune the measure of your day.
"Lord God, we confess how quickly we forget. We let the noise of the world and the weight of our schedules become the loudest things in the room. We chase after poisonous weeds and let the most beautiful truth wither from neglect. Forgive us. Help us to hear this command not as a burden, but as the lifeline it is. A rescue for our wandering hearts. We surrender the distractions, the anxieties, the exhaustion of this new season to You. Let the memory of Your body broken and Your blood shed for us be the truest, most resonant thing we know today. Help us to remember You, the one who never, ever forgets us. In Jesus' name... Amen."

This is so good. Just sitting with that thought… how he *knewwe’d forget. 🌿 It’s like that feeling in a song, that quiet moment where you just need to breathe and remember what’s true. Needed this today, honestly. My brain is just fried from this logo project, you know? Makes it hard to keep things centered. …yeah.

Whew, just barely avoided a major yogurt explosion thanks to Theo! This devotional title, “The Command Jesus Gave Because He Knew You’d Forget” – YES LORD. Can I get a witness?! It’s like He KNEW we’d be elbow-deep in laundry or trying to find matching socks for the third day in a row and just… totally lose the plot. We NEED that reminder. Amen! He knew!

This do in remembrance of Me.1 Corinthians 11:24

These are Jesus’s words. He gives this command as a loving reminder, because he knows that even the people who follow him can have memories that fail them.

The instruction to remember him exists for a simple, startling reason: Christians can, and do, forget Christ. It seems impossible that people saved by him could let him slip from their minds, but it's a sad reality. Life gets busy, work takes over, and other attachments pull our attention away. Our memory, which holds onto worthless things, can let the one person who should always be there become a passing visitor.

In plain language, this verse says, "Do this to remember me."
