    The Fragrance From His Scars

    September 18, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

It's Friday. Good to have you. I've had a crack running across my phone screen for about six months now. At first, it drove me crazy. Now? I barely see it. I've just gotten used to looking through the damage to get to what I need. It's just easier than fixing it. And honestly, some days life feels like that. We're not in a full-blown crisis, we're just.. empty. We're so used to living with the cracks in our own hearts that we stop noticing them. We just work around the exhaustion.

His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers. — Song of Songs 5:13

    The Briefing

The Bride, when she's asked what's so special about her beloved, says this: "His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers." She's saying his face is like a fragrant garden, a place of life and beauty. But wait,we know the story. We know where that face is heading. That's the same cheek that would be struck with a rod. The same face that would be stained with tears, spit on by guards, and streaked with blood from a crown of thorns. And here's what gets me,the Bride's description doesn't ignore that. It reclaims it. For us, looking back, those marks of suffering aren't signs of defeat. They're the source of the fragrance. Think about it. The furrows of grief on His face weren't just random damage. They were chiseled there by love. Every mark was a deliberate act of joinery, wedding God's strength to our weakness. He didn't hide His face from the shame, and because of that, we can find our deepest rest right there, in the evidence of His pain. This is so different from how we handle our own scars, right? We hide them. We cover the cracks. We try to present a version of ourselves that looks like it's never been hit. But God does the opposite. He presents His Son to us, scars and all, and says, "Here. This is beauty. This is where you'll find rest. This is my love for you, made visible." So when we're utterly exhausted, when we feel like we're just a collection of our own damages and failures, this verse is our anchor. We're invited to stop staring at our own brokenness and look at His. In His face, we don't just find one kind of comfort. We find a bed of spices, a whole garden of grace. He has a specific fragrance for our specific emptiness. He is, as she says, altogether lovely. And that loveliness is our peace.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Before today gets too loud, let's make this real. Think of one person who looks worn down, whose face shows the marks of a hard week. Don't just send a text. Call them. Let them hear your voice. Let your presence be a kind of sweet fragrance in their day, a reminder that they are seen and loved.
"Father, bring to our minds right now the person we've been putting off checking on. We lift them to You by name. Meet them in their weariness today. Let them feel Your presence in a real way, and quiet the noise that tells them they're alone. Remind us that in Your Son's face, we find all the grace we need for ourselves, and for them. Let us be a reflection of that grace. In Jesus' name... Amen."

“Fragrance From His Scars.” That pairing feels like a system error on first read. Scars don’t produce fragrance. But if it’s about a processed understanding, a re-categorization of what ‘fragrance’ signifies… that tracks. Worth sitting with.

“Fragrance From His Scars.” That’s it. You see it on the job site sometimes. A piece of rebar, bent, welded back. Not perfect, but stronger where it was broken. Had a talk with one of the crew, young Mark, about his screw-up last week. Told him those scars? They’ll teach him. Make him better. Yep. 👍

You don't have to carry it alone.

His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers.Song of Songs 5:13

In this part of the song, a woman describes the man she loves. She's painting a picture of him from head to toe, and this verse focuses on his face.

The image of his cheeks as a "bed of spices" points to Christ's face, which endured suffering. Those cheeks were struck, stained by tears, and covered in spit. They were lined with blood from the crown of thorns. For the believer, the memory of that sacrificial love is what makes his face fragrant and beautiful.

In plain terms, looking at him yields a whole variety of delights. His face isn't just one sweet flower, but an entire garden of fragrant spices.
