What if You're Serving God for Nothing?
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Take a second. Settle in. You know that low hum from the refrigerator? The one you don't even notice until it suddenly stops and the silence feels huge? There's an inner noise like that, too. A question that hums just beneath the surface. You say the words, 'God is good.' And you mean it.. mostly. But there's another part of you, isn't there? A part that's still tallying up the evidence, still wondering if it's really true when life feels so hard.
Doth Job fear God for nought? — Job 1:9The Briefing
That question wasn't Job's. It wasn't from a concerned friend. It was an accusation, spit from the mouth of the enemy himself. And here's what it means in our language: 'Does he really love You? Or does he just love what You give him?' This one matters. Stop what you're doing. Because this is the question that hums under the floorboards of our own faith when things go wrong. When the diagnosis comes back, when the layoff hits, when the silence from heaven feels deafening, the accuser whispers it to us, too. 'Are you just in this for the benefits? Is your faith just a good-luck charm that stopped working?' And here’s the hard, beautiful, and urgent truth of scripture. God never promised us a life free of pain. In fact, for His own, He promises the opposite. Jesus says every branch in Him that bears fruit, He prunes,He cuts back,so it will bear more fruit. That’s a promise of affliction. It sounds terrible, right? But this is not punishment. It's purification. Sooner or later, every bar of gold has to pass through the fire. The heat is meant to burn away the cheap stuff we’ve mixed in with our faith, the love of comfort, the need for approval, the expectation that God is our cosmic vending machine. Think about the timeline of our own hearts. Our faith has layers. God isn't just interested in the topsoil, the good job, the healthy kids. He's doing an archeological dig. He wants to know what's in the deep archive. Is our love for Him conditional? Does it only exist when the sun is out? The whole point is that God is worthy of being loved for nothing. For no earthly benefit at all. He's the host, not just the food on the table. And the trials of this life, the seasons where it feels like we serve Him 'for nought,' are the very things that wean us from the table and teach us to love the host. They make us ready for the reward that's coming, the one that isn't here, the one that lasts forever.
⚔️ Your Mission
So, today... the mission is an honest audit. Find a quiet moment. Ask yourself this one question: 'What am I expecting from God right now in exchange for my faith?' A better job? A healed relationship? An easier week? Just name it. Don't judge it. Just bring that transaction into the light. That's the first layer to get honest about."Gracious God, we confess that our love is so often a transaction. We want the blessings more than the Blesser. We want the gifts more than the Giver. Quiet the noise in us that is always keeping score. Help us stop white-knuckling our expectations for this life. We surrender our timeline, our definition of 'good,' and our need to be comfortable. Teach us to love You for you alone. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Like, after a whole week, coaching practice, trying to get these teens to actually listen… you feel it sometimes, that low hum of like, does any of this even matter? No cap. That’s a real thought. Big facts.
But then you remember the block, the faces, the way one kid finally gets that crossover. It’s never for nothing. Never. Gotta keep grinding. The commute alone is a ministry, am I right? That’s it right there. 🔥👊

Doth Job fear God for nought?Job 1:9
This question comes from Satan, who is challenging God about a righteous man named Job. He’s essentially accusing Job of having a transactional faith. The argument is that Job isn't loyal to God out of love or reverence; he’s just being obedient because God has made him rich and kept him safe.
The phrase "for nought" means "for nothing." Satan is asking if Job would serve God if there were no perks involved. He's claiming Job’s piety is a "love of the table, not of the host"—a love for God's blessings, not for God himself. It's a cynical bet that if the good things in Job's life were taken away, his faith would disappear with them.
In modern English, the question is: "Does Job fear God for no reason?" Or, to put it more bluntly: "Do you really think Job serves you for free?"

Okay, this title just smacked me right in the carpool line. Seriously, “What if you’re serving God for nothing?” felt like a gut punch after Lucy spent ten minutes screaming because her toast was cut “wrong.” I just stood there, sticky jam all over my last clean shirt, thinking, *am I even making a dent in anything? Can I get a witness?!
But then the Spirit just reminds you. It’s not about the instant gratification or the cosmic gold stars. It’s about showing up. Again and again. Especially when it feels like everything is chaos. My faith isn’t easy, never has been, but that’s where the realness lives, right? Amen! We keep going.
