Luke's Record of a Courage Not Our Own
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
It’s good to be with you today. Thanks for showing up. You know that feeling at three in the morning? The house is silent, except for the smoke detector. The one on the vaulted ceiling. It chirps. Once. Just loud enough to wake you up. And you know, with absolute certainty, you cannot fix this one right now. You don't have the ladder, the battery, or the will. That feeling of being subject to a small, maddening thing you can’t control, it's a feeling we know all too well.
For there stood by me this night the angel of God. — Acts 27:23The Briefing
It’s amazing how much theology is packed into a simple declaration. Luke isn't writing poetry here; he’s recording a testimony from a man in a hurricane. Paul basically says, 'In the middle of all this chaos, an angel of the God I belong to showed up.' Think about that. The storm didn't stop the angel. The darkness didn't hide Paul. The panic of professional sailors didn't change the fact that Heaven was intervening in real-time. This tells us something weighty about the character of our God. He doesn't just watch our storms from a safe distance. He dispatches help into the heart of them. His presence isn't a theory we cling to; it’s an active intervention. God’s comfort isn't a gentle pat on the head. It's a messenger sent into the darkest night, onto a ship that's about to be torn apart, with a word that changes everything, not about the circumstances, but about the outcome. But there's a deeper current running here.. This is where we bridge the gap between Sunday and Monday. We all have our own version of that storm, right? The situation at work we can't fix. The family dissonance we can't resolve. The diagnosis we can't undo. We're on a ship, and we are not at the helm. And the lie we believe in that moment is that our crisis has somehow disqualified us from God's attention. Luke's record says the opposite is true. The storm is precisely the arena for God's presence. Paul's calm wasn't a product of his personality; it was a result of a divine visitation. His courage was a gift, delivered in the dark. And that same gift, that same presence, is available to us. It doesn't promise to calm the sea around us, but it absolutely promises to calm the soul within us.
⚔️ Your Mission
Here is your next step... We can't control the storm, but we can care for the ship. Today, treat your body like it belongs to God, because it does. Here is the practical step: Drink a full glass of water. Or take a ten-minute walk. Do one small, physical thing to steward the vessel He has entrusted to you, an act of faith that says 'I am preparing this space for Your presence.'"Father, we lift up that person on our heart right now, the one in the middle of their own unfixable storm. You see the waves. You know their fear. We ask that You would stand by them this night, that Your presence would be more real to them than the crisis itself. Let them feel the deep comfort of Your nearness. Remind them they are not alone in the dark. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Read the records of the community below.TimothyAugust 09, 2026That notion of ‘courage not our own’ is quite profound. It puts one in mind of the Collect for Purity, which speaks of ‘the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit’, or perhaps even the psalmist’s plea, ‘My strength is dried up’. A quiet dependence, indeed. Contemplating this whilst cataloguing a rather fragile mediaeval psalter just now, the ink faded in places. Quite distracting, in its own way, but humbling.
Yours faithfully, Timothy

### What Acts 27:23 actually says
Paul said this while he was a prisoner on a ship. A huge storm had been raging for days, and the vessel was on the verge of being wrecked. Everyone on board, including veteran Roman soldiers and seasoned sailors, was terrified. But Paul was calm, and this verse is the start of his explanation for why.
He's saying that during the night, an angel—a messenger sent directly from God—came and stood with him. This divine visitor brought a personal word of comfort that gave Paul the courage to face the storm and reassure the rest of the crew. It was a secret source of strength when everything looked hopeless.

Man, “a courage not our own”? Big facts. No cap, that right there is what changes everything. You see the stress on these kids’ faces after school, the stuff they’re dealing with? You can’t just tell ‘em to “be brave.” Nah. Sometimes you need that download, that strength from somewhere else. That hit different. Different. That’s it right there. Real talk. 🔥👊
