    Luke's Account of Our Indictment

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Morning. Or afternoon. Whenever you are, I’m glad we’re connecting. You know that feeling when you have one huge, important thing to do? The one thing that actually matters? But instead, you clean the entire kitchen. You organize your inbox. You do laundry. You do anything and everything except the one thing. You’re not procrastinating, you’re avoiding. We get so good at managing the symptoms of our lives that we never have to face the actual disease. It’s a quiet, busy avoidance that feels productive but leaves us empty.

And there followed Him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented Him. — Luke 23:27

    The Briefing

Luke shows us this heartbreaking procession. A crowd following Jesus to His execution. And in that crowd, a group of women who are just wrecked. They are wailing, grieving, and lamenting Him. It's a raw, human moment. But wait, there's a turn coming. It's easy for us to stand with those women, to feel a sort of historical sadness for a good man being wronged. We see innocence being crushed, and it makes us ache. But the gospel defiantly pushes us past that surface-level grief. The commentary on this passage doesn't let us off that easy. It points the finger right back at us. Those women mourned what they could see. We have to mourn what we can't, our own part in it. Here’s the truth that changes everything. My sins, our sins, were the thorns pressed into His head. Our pride and our anger and our secret compromises were the whips that tore His back. Our voices are in the crowd shouting 'Crucify Him!' This wasn't just a political execution. It was a divine transaction. It tells us that God’s justice is so perfect it demanded a payment for sin. And His love is so astounding that He chose to be the payment Himself. We weren't just spectators to a tragedy. We were the reason for the rescue mission. And honestly? Seeing our role in it isn't meant to drown us in shame. It's meant to show us the scale of our restoration. We spend so much time focused on our spiritual soreness, trying to build up our moral endurance. We want a timeout from the pressure. But the cross clears all that away. It says the core problem was never our weakness, it was our guilt. And that guilt has been paid for. That's the truth that silences all the other noise. It's not a sad story from the past. It's the receipt for our freedom, signed in His blood.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Here is the challenge for today. Sin makes us the main character. The cross frees us to serve in the background. Find one task someone else dreads,at home or at work, and do it for them, anonymously. No announcement. No credit. Let the quiet act of service be a response to the loud declaration of His love for you.
"Dear Lord, thank You for not letting us keep the cross at a safe distance. Thank You for showing us our own fingerprints at the scene, not to shame us, but to show us the magnitude of Your grace. It’s a terrible and beautiful truth. Help us to stop trying to manage our spiritual soreness and instead rest in the reality that You have accomplished our full restoration. Let that gratitude define our day. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Whew, almost didn’t make it to this one after getting the kids outta bed and that crazy commute. Real talk, “indictment” is a heavy word. Makes you think about all the outstanding tasks on your spiritual project plan, you know? Like, what’s gonna show up on the audit? Gotta keep those deliverables tight. Legit. This kinda stuff makes you wanna get ahead of it. No joke.

YES LORD. Just spent twenty minutes trying to convince Judah that a blueberry Pop-Tart for breakfast is, in fact, breakfast, not a ‘candy’. Child. My sanity is on thin ice some mornings. And this ‘indictment’ idea? YES. Like, we *needto talk about it. No amount of worship music and sweet tea can cover up the fact that we are a hot mess, spiritually speaking.

Pretending faith is all sunshine and easy blessings? It makes real grace feel cheap. Give me the truth, the hard truth. Because that’s where the real redemption story starts, ain’t it? Amen. Can I get a witness? This ain’t no easy ride. But goodness, it’s real.

You don't have to carry it alone.

And there followed Him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented Him.Luke 23:27

This verse describes a moment on Jesus's painful walk to the cross. He's being led out of the city to be crucified, and a large crowd is following along the road.

Among the mob are a group of women who are openly weeping. Their grief is loud and real. They're mourning the death of a man they know to be good and innocent, who is being horribly mistreated. Many women in the crowds had personal reasons to love Jesus—some had been healed by him, or had seen him bring a loved one back from sickness or even death.
