Peter's Anchor: Tuning Our Hearts to Enduring Glory
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Glad you’re here. You’re doing better than you think. You know those app updates that completely rearrange everything, moving buttons you've used for years, or a subscription you can't cancel without navigating seven different menus? It’s a low-grade annoyance, this constant shifting, always needing to re-learn. It makes you long for something steady, doesn't it? Something that just is. Peter, writing to a community facing their own kind of overwhelm, points us toward exactly that kind of steadfast reality. Open your Bible to these words.
To Him be glory both now and forever. — 2 Peter 3:18The Briefing
But let's be real for a second.. something about Peter’s closing words in this passage just loosens the knot in your chest: 'To Him be glory both now and forever.' It feels like a steady hand on a shaking shoulder, a kind reminder that even when everything else feels like it’s shifting, there’s an immovable truth. Peter isn't asking for a future dedication; he’s calling for a present one, an ongoing recognition that Jesus is the anchor in all seasons. Think about the formative chaos of school days – the constant jostling, figuring out who you are in a room full of people doing the same. Or the low-grade anxiety of the 'package thief' paranoia, constantly tracking, feeling the need to protect what’s ours. This verse offers a different focus. It's an invitation to `graft` our attention onto something eternal, like a vine securing itself to a sturdy `trellis`. Sometimes, we need a period of `dormancy`—a quiet time to simply rest in this truth, to let go of the pressure to perform or accumulate. Peter points us to the glory of Jesus, not as a distant ideal, but as a living reality. It's a call to `prune` the anxieties and temporary worries that try to overshadow that enduring truth, allowing His glory to be our compass, right here, right now.
⚔️ Your Mission
Let's make this practical... Peter wants us to actively engage with this enduring glory. Don't overthink it, just do this: Find a quiet spot for two minutes today, maybe in your garden or by a window. Ask: "What small worry or distraction, like an overgrown branch, do You want me to `prune` from my focus today, so I can better see Your steady presence?" Then simply listen and observe."Let’s turn our hearts toward home for a second... Merciful Father, in a world that constantly demands our attention for the fleeting, help us to fix our gaze on what truly lasts. We pray for our neighbors, for colleagues, for those we might quickly judge – help us to see them through Your eyes, with the same compassion and hope You offer to us. Guide us to extend grace and understanding where it’s often easiest to withdraw. Gracious God, In Jesus' name... Amen."

The whole vibe of Peter literally seeing enduring glory, like a real, tangible thing? That’s everything. In the middle of crazy design sprints and sorting worship loops, it’s so easy to lose the now. But thinking about that direct encounter, it makes me want to pause. Like, where is that enduring glory showing up in my actual day? In a sudden color palette inspo, or that perfect chord progression? 🌿🤍 It’s a literal anchor for noticing Him.

Now then, that “Peter’s Anchor” devotional, it really made me think. All the comings and goings, the parish busywork, making sure everyone’s looked after… it’s a grand thing, but sometimes you feel a bit adrift, don’t you?
That anchor idea, it’s brilliant. Just keeps me steady, you know? Helps me remember to pause, even when I’m hurrying to set up the coffee morning, that God’s presence is the one thing that truly holds fast. A solid truth amidst the everyday flurry.
God bless, Mary.
