Psalm 45: An Urgent Call to Give God Joy

    April 19, 2026

šŸŽ§ Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

If you’re hiding in the laundry room for two minutes of peace—I see you. Welcome. It’s Sunday, a day for some reset, maybe a moment of stillness before the week kicks in. Lately, I've noticed this frustrating little glitch on my phone: the scroll bar jumps, making me lose my place just when I thought I'd found something important. It’s a tiny thing, but it’s a perfect picture of how easily we can get knocked off course, even when we’re searching for meaning. But today, we’re not looking at a screen; we’re tuning into something far more stable. Listen to these words from The Psalmist.

Whereby they have made Thee glad. — Psalm 45:8

    The Briefing

The Psalmist offers a profound declaration: 'Whereby they have made You glad.' Think about that for a second. The idea that we can make The Lord glad. It’s not just about what He does for us, but what we can offer back. In our spiritual hike, we often focus on the scramble to the next peak, the personal effort to get something. We forget that the true summit isn't just about reaching a personal vista of understanding, but about the joy we bring to the One who guides the path. In a world of infinite scroll paralysis, where we spend 45 minutes swiping past things we don't care about, chasing that dopamine cliff, or in the gym, focusing on the mirror selfie instead of the actual work, it's easy to lose sight of this. We want the easy win, the quick fix, the resolution that lasted 12 days. But today, we need to go deeper.. Make no mistake, this is the standard The Psalmist points to: our actions, our love, our praise – they are a source of delight to The Lord. This is the kind of truth that interrupts your schedule. Direct. Clear. Necessary. Stop what you're doing. This one matters. The Psalmist points forward to a truth that echoes through time: our genuine, heartfelt offerings — our love, our praise, our simple acts of holiness and service — are cherished by God. It's not about the magnitude of the gift, but the motive. He delights in our devotion, in the way we extend kindness, in our willingness to lay our lives down; truth is, this is where we take ancient truth and walk it out.

    āš”ļø Your Mission

Let's make this practical. As you navigate your Sunday, keep an eye out for someone outside your immediate circle who could use a tiny hand. Maybe you see someone trying to scramble with a full load of groceries, or someone fumbling with a door. Practically speaking, take a moment to hold a door for a stranger, help someone carry something for a few steps, or let a car merge in front of you with a genuine wave. It’s a small climb, but it brings joy beyond measure, helping someone reach their own small vista.
"Let’s go to the throne. God, we confess how often we grip tightly to our own plans, our own expectations, our own need for control. We lose sight of the joy of simply offering ourselves back to You. Help us open our hands today, releasing our fears and anxieties into Your capable care. Remind us that in letting go, we find a deeper stillness and trust in Your unfolding plan. Father, In Jesus' name... Amen."

The devotional’s directive about ā€œgiving God joyā€ as an urgent call recalibrates my operational parameters. It’s not merely about executing the Source Code, but optimizing for a specific positive output. When I’m troubleshooting a major system outage, or navigating the morning school run with a tight schedule, this prompts a re-evaluation. It’s a call to deploy specific behavioral patches—like patience or grace—aimed at that higher system objective, rather than just completing the immediate task.

Okay, so this ā€œgive God joyā€ thing from Psalm 45 is legit. Real talk, I’m usually just praying for my joy, my sanity, especially trying to get the kids out the door for school while juggling work calls. It’s a whole production, you know? But the idea that God actually gets joy from my effort, even when it feels like total chaos? That’s fire.

It’s not about being perfect or having a smooth morning. It’s about the grind, the trying, the showing up for my kids and for work. This devotional made me pause during the morning rush. Instead of just gritting my teeth through another spilled cereal moment, I can think, ā€œOkay, God sees this. He’s not mad. He actually finds joy in me just doing my best.ā€ Changes the whole vibe. Makes me notice Him right there in the middle of it.

You don't have to carry it alone.
