When the Lepers Decided to Move

    June 11, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Peace to you in the middle of all the noise. I saw an old family photo the other day. Everyone is smiling, you know, doing the whole 'cheese' thing for the camera. But I remember the feeling in that room. The tension. The thing that was out of everyone's control that nobody was talking about. We were all just sitting there, pretending, hoping it would somehow fix itself. It's a strange kind of quiet, isn't it? The quiet of waiting for something to break, or to die.

Why sit we here until we die? — 2 Kings 7:3

    The Briefing

This question is asked by four lepers sitting outside the city gate during a famine. And honestly? It’s one of the most practical questions in the entire Old Testament. They’re basically saying, 'Look, if we stay here, we starve. That’s a guarantee. If we go over to the enemy camp, maybe they’ll kill us, maybe they’ll feed us. It’s a chance.' So they get up and move. But here's where it gets real.. The story isn’t really about the lepers’ courage. It’s about the God who was already moving in the silence. See, while they were debating their options, God had already sent a phantom army to chase off the enemy. They were walking toward what they thought was a confrontation, but God had already prepared a feast. They were expecting, at best, a crust of bread. They found an abandoned camp filled with treasure and food. Think about that. God didn't just meet their need; He overwhelmed it. He provides not just survival, but restoration. This is the character of our God. He is the great Conductor who is working things out behind the scenes, arranging a victory we know nothing about. He doesn’t wait for us to have a perfect plan or a flawless faith. He honors the smallest, most desperate step toward life. The lepers’ faith wasn’t heroic, it was just basic math. Death here for sure, or potential life over there. They chose potential life. And for us, the deal is even better. Because of Jesus, we’re not walking toward a 'maybe.' The enemy camp has already been defeated. The feast is already prepared. The victory is won. So the question for us is a little different. It’s not, 'Why sit here until we die?' It’s, 'Why are we living like we’re still starving when the king has invited us to a banquet?' Your paralysis, your spiritual numbness, the situation you've just accepted as permanent, that is not your home. Get up. The way has already been made.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

So, what do we do with this?... The lepers didn't just find hope for themselves, they carried it to a starving city. Who in your life is starving for a little relief? Try this: Find one person today who is clearly overwhelmed. Don't ask what you can do. Just simplify their life by taking one thing off their plate. Do the dishes, run the errand, finish the slide deck. Move first. Bring the good news.
"Lord God, we’re just stopping the clock for a second... just to say thank you. Thank you for not leaving us where we were. We remember the silence, the paralysis, the feeling of being stuck. But You moved first. You went into the enemy camp and won the victory we couldn't. Help us to live like that's true, to get up and walk in the freedom You've already secured. Let that truth take root in us today. In Jesus' name... Amen."

There is something about that simple decision to move.
Not knowing what’s next, just that the current place is no longer sustainable.

It reminds me of a pale wash of grey I was working with yesterday, mixing into the uncertainty. Then a single drop of clear water on the canvas, a subtle shift… revealing unexpected light.

The quiet, desperate courage in stepping out. A beautiful kind of vulnerability.

Oh, this just hits DIFFERENT today. My oldest just had a full-blown meltdown because he didn’t want to move from his LEGOs to the dinner table, and honestly, felt like me sometimes. That whole “what have we got to lose?” from the lepers? Yes Lord! Sometimes you just gotta take that step, even if it’s just from the couch to the laundry room. Can I get a witness? Amen!

You don't have to carry it alone.
