Paul on Ephesians: Our Inheritance, a Foundation of Restoration

    March 18, 2026

šŸŽ§ Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Hey, glad you made it back to the ground today. I was just wiping down my coffee mug, feeling the warmth of the ceramic, and it made me think about all the things we grasp for, hoping they'll fill us up. We spend so much energy trying to earn our place, our peace. But what if our deepest security isn't something we grasp, but something we’ve already been given?

In whom also we have obtained an inheritance. — Ephesians 1:11

    The Briefing

There is a verse in Paul's letter that gets right to this: "In whom also we have obtained an inheritance." I’ve been chewing on this one since I first read it. There’s a pattern here if you look closely. It's not just poetry. It’s architecture for a human life. Paul is saying that in Jesus, we've already received our portion, our rightful share. Think about that for a second. We live in a world of curated feeds and endless options, where the pressure to be the 'main character' creates a real emptiness. It’s like streaming paralysis, scrolling for an hour only to watch nothing, feeling the shame of 'continue watching' lists. We're constantly trying to build a brand, to prove our worth. Yet, there is another layer to this.. truth is.. our identity, our belonging, our very inheritance is already secured. It’s the solid foundation laid with unwavering mortar, ensuring our life isn't just a performance. This isn't something we earn or achieve; it’s a gift The Lord offers. It sets our internal level, keeping us steady when the world tries to tilt us. This inheritance provides deep spiritual insulation against the cold comparison and constant striving. It reminds us that our worth isn't in what we acquire, but in what we’ve already received in Jesus. Paul points us to this foundational truth, encouraging us to find restoration and rest in it rather than endless searching.

    āš”ļø Your Mission

Your move for today is simply this: Share a meal with someone, anyone – a coworker, a family member, a friend. The challenge is to really be present, to use that time to lay down some good relational mortar, to find a shared level in conversation, and to offer some human insulation against the day's noise. Even just eating lunch at the same table, putting your phone away, and truly listening for a few minutes counts.
"Lord, we’re just stopping the clock for a second... to quiet the noise in our heads. So much striving, so much searching. Help us to feel the solid ground of what You have already given, to truly rest in that inheritance. Jesus, In Jesus' name... Amen."

The idea of an ā€œinheritanceā€ as the pre-approved, immutable source code of my identity. When the daily deployment gets buggy—kids fighting over breakfast, critical system error at work—remembering that foundational restoration is always active. It’s like knowing there’s a guaranteed stable build. Allows for immediate system recovery, preventing total meltdown during school drop-off. Less stress, more efficient problem-solving. This isn’t optimization, it’s core functionality.

Paul’s insistence on our divine kleronomia – our inheritance in Christ – shifts the lens. Amidst the incessant demands, the daily grind of administrative tasks or the constant need for practical discernment, it is easy to lose sight. This is not merely a posthumous promise, but a present reality of identity. To recall that we are į¼ĪŗĪ»Ī·ĻĻŽĪøĪ·Ī¼ĪµĪ½ – ā€œmade a heritageā€ – offers a profound anchoring. A theological bedrock, a true hypostasis, against the prevailing flux.
