Moses and the Two Names for Your Pain

    June 02, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Back for your daily touchstone? I love to see it. You know that feeling when your phone hits 1%? That flashing red icon. The sudden, quiet panic that you're about to be cut off. Honestly, some days feel just like that. You're holding a situation together by sheer effort, running on fumes, and you have no idea what happens when you finally stop. You just know you're naming the whole day by that feeling of being completely spent.

She called his name Ben-oni (son of sorrow), but his father called him Benjamin (son of my right hand). — Genesis 35:18

    The Briefing

Here's the thing about this moment Moses records, it's brutal. Rachel is dying. In her final, gasping breath, she names her son for the agony that's killing her. Ben-oni. Son of my sorrow. And who could blame her? That was her reality. That was the truest thing she knew right then. But it wasn't the final thing. Jacob steps in. He hears the name of sorrow, and while he's grieving his wife, he speaks a different name over his son. Benjamin. Son of my right hand. It’s not a denial of the pain, it’s a declaration of a promise beyond the pain. This is a picture of our God. He doesn't dismiss our 'Ben-oni' moments. He sits with us in them. But He always, always reserves the right to speak the final word. He is the God who finds honey in the lion's carcass and priceless pearls inside rough, ugly shells. He is the catalyst who uses the darkest, most bitter ingredients on the table and somehow brings forth life. Here's what we miss though.. the cross was the ultimate Ben-oni moment. God's own son, the Man of Sorrows, acquainted with the deepest grief imaginable. And yet, God the Father looked at the sorrow of the crucifixion and renamed it Resurrection. He looked at death and called it Benjamin, the Son at my right hand. That's the grace we live under. It doesn't erase the sorrow, no, but it redeems it. It gives it a new name and a new future. So when you're in a season that feels like it's only defined by its pain, when you've already named it 'the year of loss' or 'the month of fear', remember Jacob. Remember the Father. Your feeling is real, but it's not final. Let your sorrow simmer, but listen for the Father's voice. He is ready to speak a new name over it, if only we have the faith to trust His perspective more than our own.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Let's make this practical... The mission today is a vision audit. Name the one situation in your life you've mentally labeled 'Ben-oni',son of sorrow. Maybe that looks like writing it on a piece of paper. Then, out loud, ask God what His name for it is. You might not get a word back immediately, but the act of surrendering the right to name your own sorrow, that's the catalyst.
"Father, we’re leaning into the silence here... Gracious God, we bring to You the people in our lives who are living in a 'Ben-oni' moment. For our friend naming this season by its sorrow, for our family member defined by their pain, we ask You, the Father, to speak a new name over them. Remind them that they are the child of Your right hand. Let them feel the grace that redefines even the deepest loss. Help us to trust Your final word over our feelings. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Ah now, that idea about God having another name for our pain, that’s been turning over in my head this morning. Just after popping round to Mrs. O’Malley next door, seeing how she was, and then back to my second Barry’s. Sometimes our own names for trouble feel so heavy, don’t they? It’s brilliant altogether to remember God can give it a different colour, a new purpose entirely. Gives a body a bit of hope, anyway. Grand.

    God bless, Mary
