The Title Jesus Chose to Close the Distance
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Back for your daily touchstone? I love to see it. It's Monday, and this is where we bridge the gap between Sunday and Monday. You know that low-grade panic when you can't find your keys? That frantic pocket-patting, retracing your steps, the world stopping for a few seconds. Sometimes, our relationship with God feels a little like that. We haven't dramatically lost Him, but there's a distance. We've been avoiding Him a little, not showing up all the way because of shame. We feel like we need to find something we've misplaced before we can come home.
The Son of man. — John 3:13The Briefing
Let that sit for a second, because.. it's amazing how God hides these massive truths in plain sight. Jesus had His pick of titles, right? He could have walked the earth announcing Himself as the King of the Cosmos, the Everlasting Father, the Lord of All. Titles that would have created distance. Titles that would have put us in our place. And honestly? We would have deserved it. But over and over, His preferred title for Himself was this one. Son of Man. Think about what that means. It’s a deliberate move not away from us, but toward us. He didn’t just visit our little planetary atmosphere for a tour. He chose to breathe our air, to wear our skin, to feel our exhaustion. God, in His infinite vastness, chose to express His oneness and sympathy with us. He became our kinsman. Our brother. This wasn't a demotion for Him, it was a declaration of love for us. He was showing us that there is no majesty in Him that our love cannot approach. He knows our griefs not by observation, but by experience. So when we're feeling that quiet shame, that sense that we haven't shown up all the way and maybe shouldn't, this is our anchor. This is the truth that recalibrates everything. We aren't praying to some distant, untouchable force light-years away. We are talking to the Son of Man, who knows what it's like to be human. He knows the numbness. He knows the ache. And He has closed the distance for us. We don't have to fix ourselves to get to Him. Because of this name, we know He's already here.
⚔️ Your Mission
I have a challenge for you... because Jesus chose the lower place, let's practice that same humility. Here is the practical step: find one task today at work or at home that is 'beneath you.' Clean the shared microwave. Take out the trash no one else has touched. Do the setup or tear-down that everyone avoids. Do it quietly, without announcement. Let it be a physical echo of the God who chose to serve."Lord Jesus, we confess that it's so much easier to hide in our shame than to approach You honestly. We keep you at a distance, thinking we need to clean ourselves up first. Thank you for choosing the name 'Son of Man.' Thank you for becoming one of us, for closing the gap we could never cross. Help us to believe that you are not a distant star, but a brother who is near. Let that truth recalibrate our hearts today. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Almost seems too simple, Jesus deliberately *choosinga title. But a specific title… that’s a system establishing a communication channel. Worth sitting with, the precision.
