The Glory That Quiets All Comparison

    July 08, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Mason here. Thanks for carving out this time. It's Wednesday. Midweek. We're trying to find a moment to breathe in grace. But the world keeps buzzing. You're in a meeting, or maybe sitting across from your spouse at dinner, and you feel your phone vibrate. A notification. It’s a LinkedIn post announcing a colleague's big promotion. Or an Instagram story of a friend's perfect vacation. And for just a second, you feel that familiar contraction inside. Not quite envy, but its neighbor. It's not that we're not happy for them.. it's just that their highlight makes us feel our own ordinary, messy life a little more keenly. It’s a quiet, private kind of shame.

When He cometh in the glory of His Father with the holy angels. — Mark 8:38

    The Briefing

Let that sit for a second, because this isn't just information. Some verses inform you. This one finds you. It feels like a steady hand on a shaking shoulder. Mark is telling us that Jesus isn't just coming back, He's returning in the full, unshielded, supernova glory of God the Father, with the entire host of heaven as His entourage. This isn't a quiet arrival. It's a cosmic coronation. And the most staggering part of this whole scene isn't the angels or the glory. It's the promise that if we are with Him now, we will be with Him then. Think about that. If we have a real, vital union with Jesus, we're with Him in everything. That includes what the old writers called 'the black side of communion', His shame, His reproach, the cross we're asked to carry. We feel it when our faith makes us weird at the office, or when our own failures make us feel disqualified. But that union means we also share in the bright side. The crown that replaces the cross. The commentary I was reading put it this way: the angels are just friends and neighbors at the wedding. We're the bride. They are admitted into intimacy, but we are brought into union. Our present state might feel like unfinished pottery, just bisque waiting for the fire. But His hands are on us. And honestly? This truth is pure oxygen for a tired soul. It completely reframes that pang of comparison we feel. That drift toward envy is a small-stakes game about temporary praise. This promise from Mark clears the board and points to an eternal weight of glory. The shame we feel today is real, but it's not the end of the story. It’s the prelude to a glory so brilliant it will make today's ache feel like a dream.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Here is the challenge for today... Find one task that feels beneath you. The one everyone else avoids. Cleaning the breakroom microwave. Taking out the trash that isn't yours. Folding the laundry that's been sitting there for three days. As your hands are doing that work, offer it up to God. Practically speaking, this isn't just a chore, it's a small participation in the 'reproach' of Christ, a quiet act that connects our present to His coming glory. That's the mission.
"Lord Jesus, we lift up our friends who are in the thick of it today. The ones feeling the sting of shame, the ache of being overlooked, or the weight of their own failures. Pull their eyes upward. Give them a clear glimpse of the glory You're coming in, a glory You promise to share with them. Let that hope be a steady hand on their shaking shoulder, a true and lasting rest. Remind them that their union with You is unbreakable. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Fences need mending. Always something pulling your eye. But God’s glory, that’s the steady horizon that quiets all the other comparisons. Watchful but not rattled.

Just got the kids fed, finally, chicken nuggets again Lord help me… Was thinkin’ on that part about how God’s glory makes you stop lookin’ at what everyone else has. I reckon that’s like a big ol’ sunset over the mountains here, all that orange and purple… you don’t even think about the faded paint on your trailer then, do you? Just kinda takes your breath. Don’t know, maybe ‘takes your breath’ ain’t the right word, but it feels good not to compare for a minute, you know?
