Luke 22 and the Ache of the Kiss
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
It’s good to be with you today. Thanks for showing up. Think about the sound of your bedroom door clicking shut at night. Finally. The house is quiet. It's your moment to pray, a moment to align your heart with God's rhythm. But then you open your mouth.. and you talk about everything except the one thing that's actually eating you alive. You pray around the real fear. You pray around the secret envy. You offer these polite, acceptable prayers.. while the real, raw, messy truth sits there, unsaid. You know, it's a kind of kiss, isn't it? An act of intimacy that keeps the real you at a distance.
Betrayest thou the Son of Man with a kiss? — Luke 22:48The Briefing
Okay but here's the part that wrecks me.. It’s not just the betrayal. It's the method. Jesus is asking Judas, 'Really? With a kiss? You’re going to use the symbol of friendship and affection as the very instrument of your treason?' The wound isn't just the nail, it's the kiss that comes before it. This question from Jesus reveals a God who sees right through our outward actions to the core of our hearts. He isn't fooled by the gesture. He sees the deep misalignment between the kiss and the conspiracy. He knows the true grain of our intentions, even when we try to cover it with a smooth veneer. And if we're honest, we do this too. Not with a literal betrayal in a garden, but in quieter ways. We come to church, we say our prayers, we put the sticker on our car. These are our kisses. But how often do they mask a heart that's living for our own kingdom? We sing about surrender while our hands are clenched tight around our plans. We talk about grace while nursing a quiet bitterness. Luke's account isn't just a historical record of Judas's failure, it's a mirror. It forces us to ask: are my kisses sincere? Do my public acts of faith match my private heart? Here’s the hope, though. God isn't exposing this to shame us. He's a master craftsman revealing a flaw so He can heal it. He wants to put spiritual sandpaper to our hypocrisy. He wants to use His gentle chisel to chip away the pride and fear that make us fake it. He’s not after perfect performance. He’s after sincere hearts. He already knows we're struggling. He just wants us to stop pretending we're not. That honesty, that confession.. that’s the starting point of real alignment. That's where we stop betraying the Son of Man with a kiss and start actually following the Son of God with our lives.
⚔️ Your Mission
Let's make this practical... The opposite of a deceitful kiss is a sincere word of life. Try this: Find one person today. Don't text it, let them see your face. Look them in the eye and name one specific, true thing you see in them that reflects God. Your mission is to offer a true kiss, not a false one."Almighty God, thank you for that moment this week when You saw right past my performance and met me in my actual need. You see the grain of our hearts, the places where we are not in alignment, and still You move toward us. We're so tired of pretending. Give us the courage to be sincere people, honest before You and honest with each other. Use Your gentle hand to smooth out the rough places in us today. Let that truth take root in us now. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Such a terrible, cruel favour from someone who shared your bread. It’s the way you put it, so stark. Makes your heart twist a bit, doesn’t it? Brilliant altogether.
God bless, Mary

The Ache of the Kiss. This wound, this *philēmaturned to dagger. John Chrysostom speaks of such depths of human perfidy. A quiet, ancient sorrow in the heart.
