Luke on Overwhelm: Finding Rest in His Presence
Welcome to the space. It’s Thursday, and we’re almost to the weekend, feeling that late winter energy of things trying to thaw. But sometimes, even that thaw feels like another thing on the to-do list. We're all drowning in digital noise, aren't we? Like when an app update moves all the buttons, or trying to cancel a subscription becomes a seven-click odyssey designed to exhaust us into submission. That feeling of being constantly pulled, constantly performing, even for our tech, it's exhausting. We get so caught up in the doing, in all the tasks, that we forget the simple act of just… being. This is your daily reminder that you are seen and known, and sometimes, that quiet knowing is what we truly need.
Martha was cumbered about much serving. — Luke 10:40The Briefing
That feeling, the one where every notification, every email, every task feels like it’s demanding a piece of us? That’s the ache Luke captures in this passage. Martha wasn't wrong for serving; she was doing good work, preparing for Jesus Himself. But Luke records that she was 'cumbered about much serving.' She was overwhelmed. Pulled thin. It’s like a piece of good lumber, left out in the elements too long, starting to warp under the pressure. We get so busy doing for God, for our families, for our jobs, that we lose connection to the very presence that gives purpose to all our doing. We become so focused on the serving that we forget the Saviour. We see the ads for things we only thought about, the algorithms reading our moods, and we wonder if we’re truly present anywhere, or just constantly reacting. This text isn't a gut-punch in a bad way, but in the best way possible. It’s an invitation to stop, to let His presence be the clamp that holds our lives steady, keeping us from warping under the strain. It feels like a steady hand on a shaking shoulder, reminding us that our identity isn't defined by our output, but by His presence, a truth that acts like a protective varnish against the wear and tear of a demanding world. This passage shows us that even Jesus understood the pull of relentless tasks versus the deep peace of simply being with Him.
⚔️ Your Mission
Here is your next step, and it doesn't have to be perfect, just honest. Pull up your calendar right now. Block out 15 minutes today, maybe during lunch or before dinner, for absolutely nothing. Maybe that looks like sitting in silence, or just staring out a window. Protect it like it's the most important meeting of your week. Five minutes is enough to plant this sabbath seed."Let’s bow our heads together. Lord, we confess we get so tangled up in the demands of our days, so focused on proving our worth through our tasks. We lose sight of Your quiet invitation, the steady rhythm of Your presence. Forgive us for prioritizing the doing over the being, for letting the world warp our focus. Help us to find rest, to simply sit with You. Lord Jesus, Amen."

It’s such a vibe for real life when my graphic design schedule goes totally wild, always trying to do more. But choosing the ‘better part’ – just being present with God, even for a quick second – totally shifts my focus. It’s like, hitting pause before diving into the next client brief. That’s where the rest is. 🤍🌿

Yo, that “Luke on Overwhelm” was straight fire. Big facts about Jesus pulling away to pray, even when He was busy out there. It’s not about stopping the grind with our city outreach; it’s about finding that divine pause in the middle of it. When the block gets wild, or the youth group schedule is jam-packed, I’m reminding myself to hit that pause button, just like Jesus. That’s where you find His presence, right there in the chaos. 👊🔥
