Psalm 89: Exalted Choice for Our Restlessness

    March 02, 2026

Peace be with you. Ever wake up in the dead of night, house silent but for the fridge hum, and those thoughts just hit? Not the big crises, but the slow, chronic ache of modern life. Like that moment we scroll through our bank statement, seeing all those tiny monthly charges adding up, realizing how much convenience costs us. Or the quiet dread in a hospital waiting room, just staring at a clock that moves too slow, helpless in the stillness. We're bombarded, exhausted, and sometimes, it feels like we're just waiting for something solid to lean on. Something chosen for us.

"ā€œI have exalted one chosen out of the people.ā€" — Psalm 89:19

    The Briefing

Open your Bible to Psalm 89, Chapter 19. The Psalmist writes, ā€œI have exalted one chosen out of the people.ā€ But today, we need to go deeper. We’re living with a kind of spiritual fracture, aren't we? So many options, so much noise, and we're just trying to navigate it all without falling apart. The world promises us solutions to our restlessness—new apps, new subscriptions, new experiences. But those often leave us feeling more drained, more spread thin. It's like we're dealing with a chronic fatigue, constantly trying to patch up the symptoms without addressing the core problem. This passage is a signal flare in the darkness, a direct message cutting through all that clutter. It tells us God isn't looking for the most popular, the loudest, or the one with the most followers. The Lord has chosen someone. This isn't a cosmic popularity contest. It’s a deliberate, divine act. It means we don't have to chase after every shiny new thing, hoping it's the answer. God chose a person, one of us, to be the steady, unwavering solution to our deepest needs. This chosen one becomes like a spiritual transplant for our weary souls, a new heart to replace the fractured one trying to keep up with everything. This is where we learn to see the sacred in the ordinary – in the simple fact that God chose a human being to bridge the gap. We don't have to earn our way into this choice; it's already been made for us.

    āš”ļø Your Mission

Let's put this into practice. The challenge is to take a short, focused prayer walk today. Step outside, even just around the block or your parking lot, and pray out loud—under your breath is fine—for someone specific you know who's feeling chosen-out, overlooked, or simply struggling. Five minutes is enough; it doesn't have to be perfect, just honest.
"Holy Spirit, come level the ground for us. We confess our own restlessness, our tendency to chase after so many things that never truly satisfy. Help us to see the 'chosen one' you've provided, and through that, open our eyes to the people around us who feel overlooked, unchosen, or just plain lost. We bring them before you now, Lord, asking you to meet them in their ache, to show them they are seen. Jesus, we trust in your steadfast choice for us and for them. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Okay, that devotional! ā€œExalted Choice for Our Restlessness.ā€ Can I get a witness? Because yes! That ā€œslow, chronic ache of modern lifeā€? Girl, that’s not just at night. That’s like, 7 AM with three kids needing breakfast and shoes and someone’s forgotten their homework! You just want to scream!

But the devotional reminded me that even in all that noise, all that scramble, God is our exalted choice. He’s the rest, right there in the middle of it. Not after the chaos, but in it. Choosing Him means finding that calm space in the crazy. Hallelujah! That’s a game-changer for my next school drop-off. Amen!

Honey, that devotional spoke right to my spirit today. That ā€˜slow, chronic ache of modern life’ it talked about? Lord, I see it in our young people, trying to make their way, and in our elders, carrying so much. Sometimes those thoughts just hit you, don’t they, especially when the day quiets down and your mind starts to wander.

But it’s a good reminder. Even in all that restless feeling, that quiet worry, the Lord is my shepherd. It helps me pause, remember His steadfastness through all the demands of the day, all the unseen burdens. Won’t He do it? He always has, and He always will.

You don't have to carry it alone.
