Matthew: Finding Steadfastness in Distraction
đ§ Today's devotional â listen while you start your day
Hey, it's Mason. Welcome back to the Daily Eb, where we pause to recognize the evidence of God. Pull up a chair. This one's worth a slow morning. You know those mornings when youâre stuck in traffic, staring at endless brake lights, and your mind just starts wandering? Maybe you hit that one intersection, the one where you always catch yourself thinking about where youâre headed, or whatâs pulling you in different directions. Sometimes, it feels like weâre just being led.
Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. â Matthew 4:1The Briefing
Look at what is written in Matthew, who witnessed so much, simply records: Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, straight into a face-off with the devil. Think about that. Not accidentally stumbled into it, led there. Itâs like, you sign up for a free trial, thinking itâs convenience, but then you realize the automatic renewal has you locked into a bundle you never really wanted, draining your spiritual bank account. Itâs the post-subscription fatigue, but for our souls. We think weâre in control, but sometimes we're just passively pulled along. Here's the thing, this wasnât an interruption. It was part of the divine joinery, a deliberate connection in the unfolding plan. Even Jesus, perfectly steadfast, had to walk this path. It reminds me of having a pet, honestly. You love them, right? But you also know theyâll claim every piece of furniture, leave hair everywhere, and constantly need you. Itâs a beautiful burden, a persistent presence. The devilâs influence is like that pet hair, seemingly everywhere, demanding attention. Itâs a constant friction, a knot in the grain of our daily lives. Matthewâs words here don't say Jesus _sought_ temptation; He was directed. It wasn't about avoiding the friction, but walking through it. The Spirit leads, yes, but sometimes that path goes straight through the distraction, not around it. The finishing work on our lives isn't about escaping the struggle, but about how we hold up under the pressure, how we lean into the purpose of that leading.
âïž Your Mission
Let's make this practical, because the path Jesus walked is one we often face. Don't overthink it, just do this: Find a quiet space for five minutes. Write down one 'knot' in the grain of your heart â one persistent distraction or avoidance you've been carrying, one area where you suspect you're being led somewhere you don't really want to go. Finish this sentence: 'If I'm honest, I've been...' Just name it."Letâs pray. Heavenly Father, sometimes we resist being led, especially when the path feels difficult or goes through uncomfortable places. Help us to lean into your sovereign joinery in our lives, even when it feels like a wilderness. Quiet our racing thoughts and help us tune our hearts to your Spirit. Give us the courage to face the things weâve been avoiding, trusting that your presence is steadfast even in temptation. Lord God, In Jesus' name... Amen."

The âSteadfastness in Distractionâ devotional was a powerful reminder. My calendar is packed, and keeping up with the kidsâ activities feels like a full-time job. Itâs easy to get lost in the noise. But the idea of intentional focus, even in micro-moments? Thatâs impactful. It helps me pause and remember His direction, especially when Iâm strategizing for a new client or coordinating Dream Team logistics. Definitely a relevant next step.
