Matthew's Warning: Finding a Clear Path to Refuge
š§ Today's devotional ā listen while you start your day
Another day, another chance to mark the ground. Welcome. Sometimes, the quiet just hits you, right? Like when the house finally settles after everyone's left, and you're just left with the creaks and groans of the old place. It's not the comfortable quiet of a familiar friend, you know? Itās more like that awkward silence you get after waving to a neighbor from across the driveway, and you both realize youāre still making eye contact. That kind of quiet can feel like itās just holding its breath, waiting for something to break it. And honestly? Sometimes that quiet isn't peaceful at all. Itās just the sound of something building.
The wrath to come. ā Matthew 3:7The Briefing
And that's where the text flips the script.. Matthew's words here, just three of them, they hit like a cold front: 'The wrath to come.' Itās a gut-punch, isn't it? Matthew, who was right there, heās pointing to something big, something powerful heading our way. Heās not talking about a little drizzle, you know? Heās describing a storm, a true tempest, that, for some, is still on the horizon. Think about that. You can feel the air getting heavy, see the sky darken, and know a hurricane is building, tearing up everything in its path. That's the dread heās describing. But here's the thing, for those of us who have trusted Jesus, that storm, the one Matthew saw coming, it's already passed over us. Jesus, He stood right in its center, taking the full force, so we wouldnāt have to. Matthew isn't just giving a warning. Heās showing us where the shelter is. Heās saying, look, donāt face that alone, there's a place, a refuge, where the fury is overpast. It's a call to honest self-assessment, where we learn to see the sacred in the ordinary, even when the ordinary feels like a quiet before a storm. Jesus is that rock of shelter, His side riven for us. That's pure oxygen for a tired soul, honestly.
āļø Your Mission
So, what do we do with this?... Think about your calendar right now, especially with Mother's Day coming up. Is there an obligation, a 'yes' you gave out of guilt rather than genuine desire, that's feeling like a low-grade storm brewing? For today's mission, I want you to politely, but firmly, draw a clear line. Text or email the person involved and say, 'I need to pull back from this commitment right now.' Itās about creating a refuge of peace for yourself, making space for what truly matters."Gracious God, we confess our tendency to chase after every wind, to let the storms of obligation and anxiety build around us. We often forget the shelter You already provided. Forgive us for trying to brave the tempest on our own, for not remembering Your riven side is our true refuge. Help us to lean into Your grace, to trust that the worst has passed, and to live in the clear peace You offer. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Honey, sometimes my path looks like a toddler threw all the toys on it! But that idea, that there is a clear path? That God shows us the way, even when Iām tripping over sippy cups and permission slips? Hallelujah! It makes me stop, even just for a breath in the pantry, and remember Godās got my steps. Heās my refuge in the car line, my peace when the laundry monster tries to eat me whole. Can I get a witness? Itās about remembering Heās the straight line through all my zigzags! Thank you, Jesus!
