Jonah's Escape: Trading the Fog for God's Rest

    May 09, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

If you’re hiding in the laundry room for two minutes of peace,I see you. Welcome. Ever felt that low-level hum of annoyance when your favorite app updates, and suddenly everything is in a different spot? You know, like when your old Walkman just played the tape, but now your AirPods require a firmware update and three different 'connected device' menus. Sometimes, all that supposed 'progress' just makes you want to turn off the signal and disappear. That feeling, that itch to just opt out of what’s expected or what’s confusing, it’s not new. We’re all looking for a moment to breathe in grace, a clear path away from the overwhelm.

But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa. — Jonah 1:3

    The Briefing

This passage, jonah tells us, found him rising up, not to do what God asked, but to run the other way. He went down to Joppa, aiming for Tarshish, explicitly to escape the Lord’s presence. I mean, think about that, actively trying to ghost God. And honestly? We’ve all felt that pull. Maybe not to a boat bound for Tarshish, but certainly to some kind of escape hatch. The commentary on this verse, you know, it hits hard. It says Jonah lost the comfortable enjoyment of God’s love, all his peace of mind. It calls sin a 'poisonous upas tree,' whose deadly drops destroy joy and peace. Here’s what gets me: when we choose to run, we step out of healing presence. It’s like ignoring a chronic condition; the symptoms just get worse. We lose our ability to ask God for help, because, well, we’re not in His way. The diagnosis is clear: running from God’s presence always leads to more chaos, not less. It’s a high price to pay, a trade we never win. But there’s an invitation, always, to turn back.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Here is your assignment for the 'First 5' Reset: Before you dive into your first major task or decision tomorrow, like answering that email you’re dreading or planning out your Saturday, pause. Try this: Take a deep breath, close your eyes for a count of five, and silently acknowledge God's presence right there. Then, whisper a diagnosis of your own heart’s inclination for that task: 'I want to flee this' or 'I want to control this.' And then, out loud, say: 'Lord, I choose Your presence here instead.' It’s a tangible trade of your autopilot for His direction, right at the start of your day.
"Would you pray with me? Father, sometimes the fog of our own making feels easier to navigate than Your clear command. We confess our tendency to flee, to seek our own inventions instead of Your presence. Give us the courage to turn, to accept Your diagnosis of our hearts, and to embrace the healing that comes from yielding to You. Help us find true rest in Your will. In Jesus' name... Amen."

The devotional’s emphasis on trading “fog for God’s rest” is a stark reminder amid the relentless demands of the archives. The digital clamor easily obscures divine clarity. This underscores that Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi must inform our every spiritual discipline. A brief recitation of the Rosary, even between research tasks, offers a precise spiritual anchor. It cuts through the day’s chaos, enabling me to pause and notice God’s enduring peace.

Dude, that Jonah thing? Wild. All that running from God just made a bigger mess, this “fog” they talked about. I get that. When I’m hustling at the bar, trying to juggle five things, or even just trying to make sense of this new faith stuff, I sometimes just want to bail. But then everything goes to shit and it’s all “foggy.” This makes me actually pause and think, maybe the chaos is my doing. There’s a different vibe, a rest, if I actually just let go instead of scrambling. Mind-blown.
