The Psalmist: Your Unmoving Home in Constant Change

    May 12, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

I know it’s a lot out there right now, but I’m glad you’re here. You know how sometimes you’re in the car, just driving, and the kids are quiet in the back, maybe you're humming some old ice cream truck jingle to yourself? And for a moment, the world just goes… still. But even in that stillness, if you listen closely, there's always a subtle hum, right? That constant, low vibration of the engine, the road, the world just keeps moving, always changing underneath you. Sometimes, that's what life feels like, a constant motion, a low hum of anxiety beneath the surface. We're looking for somewhere solid to lean into.

Thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the Most High, thy habitation. — Psalm 91:9

    The Briefing

"Thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the Most High, thy habitation." that's a verse that does its best work in silence, you know? The Psalmist is essentially saying, "You have chosen the Lord, your safe haven, the Most High God, as your actual home." Think about that for a second. The old stories, like the Israelites wandering in the desert, they were constantly on the move. Every day brought a new landscape, a new set of challenges, never really settling in one spot. Wells, palm trees, nothing could hold them long. But even then, the commentary says, they had an abiding home in God. His presence, that cloud by day and fire by night, was their roof-tree, their constant. For us, life still throws us into constant motion, doesn't it? One day you're up, the next you're down. Plans shift, circumstances change their soil chemistry without warning. But wait, there's a turn coming.. The Psalmist is testifying that no matter the external wilderness, our relationship with God, that's the one thing that doesn't change. He is the unmoving mansion of rest. You can lose everything else, walk through any thicket, but what you have in God? That's always there. It's where your roots go deep, where you truly belong, where you can finally bloom, where we turn theology into biography.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

So, what do we do with this? The challenge is to ask: where am I performing faith instead of actually living it? Find someone today who's navigating a particularly rocky thicket, maybe someone whose own soil chemistry feels out of whack. Reach out and simply offer to be a steady, quiet presence for them, without needing to fix anything.
"Let's wrap this time in prayer. Almighty God, we thank You for being our steady, unmoving habitation, our true home when everything else is shifting sand. Thank You that our roots run deep in Your love, a love that never changes, never wavers. Help us to truly rest in that truth, to make You our constant dwelling. Let that truth take root in us today. In Jesus' name... Amen."

That devotional, about God being an unmoving home, it makes you think. In the shop, sometimes a cut goes bad, or the wood doesn’t want to dry right. Or a client changes their mind again, and you have to redo drawings. It feels like things are always moving, always needing fixing.

But this idea of God just staying put, being steady. It helps. When the measurements get hard, or the glue won’t set, I can just remember that. It’s like finding a solid, heavy workbench in a room full of clutter. It helps me quiet my mind, put my hands to the work, knowing there is something that does not change, no matter what happens with the saw or the sandpaper.

Lord help me… some days, I reckon everything’s just flyin’ apart. Kids fightin’ ‘fore school, bills pilin’ up, folks actin’ wild at the dollar store… it gets awful loud in my head. But this here thing… talkin’ ‘bout God bein’ like a steady home, unmovin’ no matter what’s shakin’ around it. It kinda makes you stop, don’t it? Just picturin’ somethin’ solid when my world feels like it’s gonna tumble down, that’s somethin’ a worn-out mama needs to hear.

You don't have to carry it alone.
