Jeremiah and the End of Self-Improvement

    September 30, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Whatever kind of morning this has been, you're here now. Remember when you were a kid, before you could Google everything? You'd ask a question, and if no adult knew the answer, you just.. didn't know. The wondering was part of it. Now, we have endless ways to measure and check everything, especially ourselves. We live with this constant performance review running in our heads, and it often leads to this deep, quiet doubt. You can be in it for so long you start to wonder if that feeling of not-quite-enough is just where you live now.

The Lord our Righteousness. — Jeremiah 23:6

    The Briefing

It’s exhausting, isn't it? The constant, low-grade hum of self-evaluation. We wake up and the internal accounting begins. Did I spend enough time in prayer? Was I patient with the kids? Did I say the right thing in that meeting? We’re always checking our spiritual balance, and most days, it feels like our liabilities far outweigh our assets. We live with this nagging sense of being spiritually overdrawn, and we just hope nobody finds out. Then Jeremiah gives us this name for God. It's just four words, but they change the entire equation: 'The Lord our Righteousness.' This isn't a description of God. It's a declaration about us. In plain English, it means God Himself is our right-standing. It's not a status we earn. It's a person we receive. Think about that. When we're stuck dwelling on our own failures, our own corruption, of course we're gonna be downcast. It's like staring at a bankrupt bank statement all day. But God's solution wasn't to give us a spiritual improvement plan. It was to perform a complete asset transfer. He looks at our account, with all its debt and failure, and He credits it with the perfect, inexhaustible righteousness of His Son. It’s done. On the cross, Jesus said, 'It is finished!' and that includes our striving. Our standing with God is not a fluctuating currency based on our daily performance. It's a fixed asset, secured by Christ. And here's where it gets real. That truth doesn't make us lazy. It frees us. When you know you're not on trial, you can finally stop performing. Gratitude, not fear, becomes the new motive. We don't serve Him to get right with Him. We serve Him because, in an act of stunning love, we are already right with Him.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Here's where it gets uncomfortable, but simple. Today, just once, stop the internal accounting. Place your hand on your chest and feel your own heartbeat. Then say this one sentence out loud: 'Lord, You are my righteousness.' Let your body hear the truth before your mind can argue with it. If that's not for you, find a mirror. Look yourself in the eye and say, 'In Christ, my account is settled.' This isn't a magic trick; it's training ourselves to believe what is already true.
"Almighty God, we spend so much time keeping score,on ourselves, and on everyone else. Quiet the noise of our own internal judgment. Help us to see the people in our lives not as a list of their faults, but as people You love. Give us Your eyes for them today. Let us be agents of Your grace, not our own criticism. Help us rest in what You've already done. In Jesus' name... Amen."

“End of Self-Improvement.” Yep. That is it. Folks spend too much time trying to polish themselves up for God, like He can’t see past the shine. It’s like trying to make my old F-150 look like a showroom model with just a quick wax before inspection. Doesn’t fool anybody, especially the man upstairs.

Had a talk with young Mike on the site last week, he was busting himself trying to prove something to everyone. Told him, “Just show up. Do the work right. Be honest. Be who you are.” That’s what it comes down to. God wants the real you, flaws and all. Not some perfect version we cooked up. It’s about integrity, not some slick act. Spot on. 👍

Lord help me, just finished up with this lady arguing over coupons all morning at the Dollar General, and then trying to get little Timmy to eat his green beans… I reckon just getting through a day feels like enough improvement sometimes. Always felt like I had to fix everything myself, make myself better, but it’s like a leaky bucket, you know? Never quite full. Makes a body wonder if that’s even what God wants, all that striving. Bless his heart, he probably just wants us to kinda… I don’t know, be ourselves? Messy as that is.

You don't have to carry it alone.

    The Lord our Righteousness.Jeremiah 23:6

In this passage from Jeremiah, God gives a name to a promised future king. Christians have always understood this king to be Jesus Christ, and this name is one of his titles.

This title explains how we're made right with God. Our standing isn't based on our own efforts or moral record. Instead, when we have faith in Jesus, his perfect righteousness is counted as ours. It's his goodness, not our own, that makes us complete in God's eyes.
