When God Rustles the Trees
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Glad you carved out the time. You know that feeling when you walk in the door at the end of the day? Keys hit the counter, bag hits the floor. And in the quiet, it hits you. That thing you prayed about for years, the one you'd honestly forgotten,it happened this week. Not with a lightning strike, but with a quiet little click. You'd stopped listening for it, and then.. there it was.
When thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, then thou shalt bestir thyself. — 2 Samuel 5:24The Briefing
This verse is God speaking to David before a battle. In plain English, He's saying: 'When you hear the sound of marching in the treetops, that's your signal. Get moving.' It's a strange and beautiful picture, isn't it? An army you can't see, a sound that signals a shift in the fight. And honestly, we need that. Because so much of our spiritual life feels like waiting in the quiet. We pray. We try to read. We show up. And we're met with… silence. We feel stuck in the harbor, anchor down, maybe a little rust forming on the chain. We can't make the wind blow. We can't force a feeling. We can't manufacture a sign that God is with us. And the anxiety of that silence is real. We start to wonder if we're doing it wrong, or if He's even there at all. But this passage is a promise. God does give signals. He has His own timing, which we can't always fathom, but He doesn't leave us alone. The 'sound in the trees' isn't always a literal army. Sometimes it's that quiet answer to a prayer we'd given up on. Sometimes it's a scripture that suddenly lands with new weight. Sometimes it's a wave of compassion for someone that comes out of nowhere. These moments aren't just random good moods. They are invitations. They are the sound of the Spirit moving ahead of us. Here's the thing, though. We can't create the wind, but we are commanded to bestir ourselves,to get moving, when it comes. We are responsible for hoisting the sail. When that unexpected grace shows up, that's the time to push into prayer. When you feel that sudden clarity, that's the time to break that old habit. When your heart softens, that's the time to make the call. God is providing the momentum. Our job is to act on it. That He gives us these signals at all is a gift. He didn't have to tell us His plan. But He did. And He still does.
⚔️ Your Mission
Let's get concrete. When you feel that nudge of the Spirit today, that 'sound in the trees',don't let it fade. Act on it. Skip that second coffee or the takeout lunch you were planning and give the cash, directly, to the first person you see who needs it. If that's not your situation: spend the thirty minutes you'd normally scroll on your phone to call someone who is stuck in a quiet harbor of their own and listen, really listen, to where they're at. We raise the sail by moving for others."Lord Jesus, thank you. Thank you for not leaving us alone in the quiet. We're grateful for the signs, the little whispers that show You're moving when we thought everything was still. Help us to be awake enough to hear them. Give us the courage to get up and move when You say 'now.' Help us trust the signs You send. In Jesus' name... Amen."Tomorrow’s Eb, in your inboxOne short devotional each morning, audio included. Read the records of the community below.TimothySeptember 30, 2026That image of God’s presence in the rustling trees brings to mind Psalm 104, particularly “the trees of the Lord are full of sap; even the cedars of Libanus which he hath planted.” There is such a gentle, almost imperceptible, way God often makes Himself known, requiring a quiet attention. One hears it, too, in the bells of St. Mary’s as I cycle past, a steady, subtle summons. These quiet things often carry the greatest truth. Duty calls.
Yours faithfully,
TimothyYou don't have to carry it alone.

What 2 Samuel 5:24 actually says
God gives this instruction as a signal for when to move. The "sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees" isn't a random noise. It's a specific sign that the time for action has arrived because His help and favor are especially present.
That sound is a picture of a season when God’s Spirit is clearly at work. For an individual, it’s when prayer feels powerful and Scripture feels alive. The command to "bestir thyself" means that's your cue. It’s the moment to act decisively and push forward, because you have a spiritual wind at your back.
In modern language, the instruction is straightforward: "When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then you are to move out."

Well now, just having my second cup of Barry’s and saw this. Sometimes we’re all waiting for a grand shout, aren’t we? But God often works in the soft breezes. Made me think of Mrs. O’Malley next door, a quiet blessing she is. Grand altogether, this reminder to listen closely.
God bless, Mary
