The Ache That Proves You're Alive
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Alright, let's get into it. It's Monday. You're pushing that squeaky, wobbly-wheeled cart down the grocery aisle. It feels like you're just going through the motions.. again. And a quiet thought lands: is this it? Is buying milk and bread the most significant thing I'm going to do for God today? We have this deep longing to be part of something that matters, something eternal. But our day is filled with the terribly, painfully ordinary.
Tell me . . . where Thou feedest, where Thou makest Thy flock to rest at noon. — Song of Songs 1:7The Briefing
This verse is one of the most honest prayers in the Bible. Stripped down, the bride is saying, 'Tell me where you are. Tell me where you're working, where your people are finding real rest, because I need to be there.' It's a raw, urgent question. It's the ache of someone who feels like they're on the outside looking in. And let's be honest, we know that feeling. The gnawing sense that we're missing it. That God is moving somewhere else, with other people, and we're stuck in the spiritual suburbs. We hear about what God is doing, but it feels distant. And right on cue, the lies start whispering. Satan tells us we're unworthy. Our own hearts tell us we're too weak, too inconsistent. We see the Shepherd's companions, and we think, 'That's for them, not for me.' But this verse is defiant. It doesn't ask, am I worthy? It asks, where are you? It assumes a right to be with the Shepherd. And here's the thing: our unworthiness is not new information to God. He knew we were a mess when He first loved us. He knows we're weak right now. In fact, our weakness is the very reason we need to be where He is. You don't get strong on your own and then go find the flock. You go to the flock because you need to be strengthened. You go to the Shepherd because you need to be kept safe. That ache we feel? That longing to be where He is? That's not a sign of failure. It's a sign of life. A dry seedling will wither in place, but a living one will bend toward the light. Our longing is proof that His life is in us, and it's calling us home. Sometimes, it feels like He's withdrawn, but it's often a kind of pruning,an invitation to seek Him more desperately, to realize that nothing else satisfies. He's not hiding from you. He's waiting for you to ask where He is. And that question, that honest ache, is the only map we'll ever need.
⚔️ Your Mission
Here's the mission today. It's an act of joining the Shepherd where He's working. Set a timer for five minutes. Just five. Pick one person you know who feels distant from God, and for that entire time, pray for them by name. Stand watch. Don't let your mind wander. Or, if that's not where you're at: write their name on a sticky note and put it on your desk or your car's dashboard. Every time you see it, ask the Shepherd to draw them into His flock."Gracious God, we confess that we get lost in the motions. We wander off and forget where to find rest. We listen to the lies that tell us we're not worthy to be with you, that we're too weak to belong to your flock. Quiet that noise. Remind us that our longing for You is a sign of life You planted in us. Show us where You are today, and give us the courage to go there. Draw us back to Yourself, the only place we find our rest. In Jesus' name... Amen."Tomorrow’s Eb, in your inboxOne short devotional each morning, audio included. Unsubscribe any time.

What Song of Songs 1:7 actually says
This verse is the cry of a believer who feels distant from Christ and wants to be close to him again. It's a direct question driven by a deep longing for his presence. The speaker is essentially asking, "Where are you right now? I need to be where you are."
The two parts of the question point to specific needs. Asking where he "feeds" his flock is about finding spiritual nourishment. It's a promise to go wherever Christ is—to church, to prayer, to the Bible—to be supplied. The request to know where he makes his flock "rest at noon" is about finding a unique, God-given peace and safety that can only be found with him.
In simple terms, the verse is asking: "Tell me where you pasture your flock, where you let them lie down and rest in the midday heat."

Man, that title hits different. Different. ‘The Ache That Proves You’re Alive.’ Big facts right there. No cap. Had to re-read that line a couple times, for real. Sometimes you feel that heavy in your spirit, you know? Like, everything’s a grind. But then you realize, that ain’t just static. That’s movement. That’s purpose bubbling up. It’s proof you’re not just existing. You’re *doingsomething. Alive. So alive. Like watching the teens I mentor push past their doubts. It’s an ache for them, and for me seeing it, but it means they’re not giving up. That’s it right there. Keeps you hungry. Keeps you on your toes. 🔥👊
