Matthew's Defiant Truth About Your Worst Habit
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Glad you carved out the time. I remember being in junior high band, trying to learn the trumpet part for some concert piece. There was this one run of notes in the middle, and I just could not get it. Every single time, my fingers would trip over each other and this horrible, squawking sound would come out. It got so bad that I started to dread that part of the song before we even got to it. It felt like the mistake was already written into the music. It felt inevitable.
He shall save His people from their sins. — Matthew 1:21The Briefing
A lot of us hear 'saved' and we think 'ticket punched.' A fire escape from hell. A future promise. And it is that, thank God. But it's so much more. The angel of the Lord tells Joseph that this baby will save His people from their sins. Not in them. from them. That one word changes everything. It’s a declaration of war. It means Jesus didn’t just come to forgive the sins we’ve committed. He came to break the power of the sins that have committed themselves to us. Think about that one habit. That pattern. That thing that has its hooks in you so deep you think it's just part of your personality now. The anger that flashes before you can stop it. The lazy comfort of gossip. The secret thing you look at on your phone when you’re alone. It creates this awful dissonance in our souls, right? We know the song we’re supposed to be playing, the music of a life lived for God,but we keep hitting this ugly, jarring note. And we start to believe that’s just our part of the score. But this verse says no. It says the Conductor has come to retake the orchestra. Sin will still be present,it whispers lies from the back row,but it does not get the baton. It is not the master anymore. Christ is. The Lion of Judah has prevailed, and the dragon gets cast out. Here's the hard, defiant truth: if we are comfortable with our sin, if it’s still running the show, we have to ask if we’ve really understood salvation at all. Grace that doesn't change us isn't grace. It's just a cheap excuse. Christ saves His people by making them holy. He is tuning us to His key, day by day. He is saving us from our sins, right now, on a Tuesday.
⚔️ Your Mission
Let's act like this is true. Name the one sin, the one pattern, that feels inevitable in your life. The one you’ve made peace with. Today, you will perform one, small, defiant act of holiness against it. If it’s gossip, you will send a text praising the person you’d normally criticize. If it’s envy, you will publicly celebrate someone else's win. You go first. If that’s not your struggle today: set a ten-minute timer and pray, by name, for someone you know who is trapped. Stand watch for them. Because this salvation is for them, too."Dear Lord, we confess it. There are parts of our lives where sin is still on the throne. We've gotten used to the noise, to the wrong notes. We call it 'just how we are.' Forgive us for settling for a counterfeit grace that costs nothing and changes nothing. We name that sin before You right now... the anger, the lust, the bitterness, the pride. Break its power. Remind us that the war is already won. Make us holy, because You are holy. In Jesus' name... Amen."

That part about your “worst habit”… it just kinda stopped me. Bless his heart, like God knows what you’re really fightin’ with, things nobody else sees. I reckon I always figured He’d just be disappointed in me. But reading this… it makes you wonder if maybe He sees something different. Not just the bad part, I don’t know, maybe that’s not the right word but it feels like He understands.

He shall save His people from their sins.Matthew 1:21
These words are from an angel, speaking to Joseph in a dream. The angel instructs him to name the child Jesus, and that specific name carries enormous weight.
While the rest of the verse explains *why* he's given this name—to save his people—the name itself is the focus here. To a believer, 'Jesus' is the most cherished of all His titles. It's considered sweeter than King, Prophet, or Emmanuel. The name itself becomes the melody for their worship and the summary of all their joy.

Saw a stretch of fence leaning hard near the creek this morning. The wind shifts things. This ‘defiant truth’ in Matthew… reckon truth stands defiant against what’s broken. Whether a man’s own habits or the way the world seems to be listing. The Lord’s word is the real boundary marker. What needs straightening, He will straighten. That is sovereign. Keeps a man watchful but not rattled, seeing how things play out. Like it says, “the end is not yet.” The Author has it all in hand.
