The Prayer That Defies Spiritual Gravity

    August 17, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Hey there. It's Monday. I was grabbing coffee this morning and saw a woman just staring out the window. You know the look. It wasn't just tired. It was heavy. And it reminded me of that feeling when you're watching a relationship,a friendship, something with family, just slowly dissolve. And there's nothing you can do but watch it happen. It's this quiet, helpless ache. A feeling of being pulled downward.

Lift them up for ever. — Psalm 28:9

    The Briefing

The Psalmist writes four simple words that are really a desperate plea: "Lift them up for ever." He’s basically saying, "God, carry Your people. Elevate them. Forever." And let's be honest, we need it. By our very nature, we are heavy. We trend downward. Sparks fly up, but our souls, weighed down by sin and sorrow, tend to fall. It’s our default setting. This prayer isn't a request for a temporary mood boost. It’s a confession that we can’t fly on our own. It acknowledges that God is the only one who can defy this spiritual gravity. But here's where it gets real.. this isn't just a prayer for a better character or a win in our daily conflicts, though it is that. The Psalmist is pointing to a deep need for rescue. We need to be lifted out of the muck of this world, to have our hearts set on something higher than our anxieties. In the middle of the fight, when the enemy has a foot on our neck, we need reinforcements we can’t summon ourselves. This prayer is a recognition that our own stronghold has a breach. We need a rescuer. And God answered this prayer in the most dramatic way possible. He sent His Son not just to lift us, but to go under us. Jesus went down into the grave, the lowest place,to become the foundation that lifts us up forever. His resurrection is the ultimate "lifting up." So when we feel that downward pull today, that grief of watching a relationship dissolve, that anxiety about the future,we have a defiant hope. Our heaviness is real, but His power to lift is greater. Culture says to pull yourself up. The Creator says He will lift you up. I know which one I’m going with.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Here is how we walk this out... The world will always try to add more weight. The challenge is to let God do the lifting. Look at your calendar for today or this week. Find one "yes" that's really a "no" you were too guilty to say. An obligation, not a calling. Send the text. Make the call. Cancel it. That isn't selfish,it's clearing the field for God's reinforcements.
"Lord Jesus, we confess we are so heavy. We carry the weight of things we can’t fix, relationships that are breaking, anxieties that have become a stronghold in our minds. We can’t lift ourselves up. So we ask You to do what only You can do. Fulfill the Psalmist's prayer in us today. Lift our heads. Lift our spirits. Lift us into Your victory. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Heavy rain makes the soil soft. But the roots go down deep. They find hold, even when it is shifting. A strong root does not give up. Prayer can feel like that. Pushing against the current. Holding steady. Yes.

Defies spiritual gravity, YES LORD! Just wrestled a toddler into naptime so I could sneak two minutes. Felt like trying to lift a car sometimes. But then that whisper… that’s where the lift comes from, isn’t it? Amen. This life is heavy, but His strength is heavier. Can I get a witness?

Lift them up for ever.Psalm 28:9

David is praying for God's people. He sees that by nature, people are heavy with sin and tend to fall downward, not rise upward. So he asks God to intervene and "lift them up forever." This isn't a single request, but a plea for God to raise His people up in every area of life.

The prayer asks God to lift them up in three specific ways. First, in their character—to raise them above the world's focus on money and pleasure and set their hearts on what lasts. Second, in their conflicts—to give them victory in their battles and not let them stay defeated. And finally, at the very end—to lift their bodies from the grave and bring them home to His eternal kingdom.
