The Scorn He Carried For Us

    August 14, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

If you’re hiding in the laundry room for two minutes of peace,I see you. Welcome. You know that feeling when the show you're streaming hits the climax and the little buffer wheel just starts spinning? That helpless, frustrating wait. You can't do anything but sit there while the story is stuck. Sometimes our lives feel like that. We get stuck under someone's opinion, their criticism, their scorn. We're just spinning, waiting for the judgment to pass, and it feels like it never will. It's your daily reminder that you are seen and known, even there.

All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head. — Psalm 22:7

    The Briefing

The Psalmist writes, "All they that see me laugh me to scorn.. they shake the head." In other words: everyone who sees me, mocks me. They sneer. They treat me like a joke. It’s a picture of total, public humiliation. Okay but here's the part that wrecks me.. these words aren't just about a bad day for the songwriter. They are a prophecy. These are the exact words Jesus could have spoken from the cross. Mockery was a massive ingredient in His suffering. The soldiers, the priests, the random people in the crowd, everyone joined in. Ridicule is brutal. It’s cruel and it cuts right to the quick, especially when you're already in pain. And Jesus took all of it. This reveals something profound about God: His love has no breaking point. Think about that. He chose to absorb the full, concentrated inflation of human scorn as part of the debt He came to pay. And He paid it for the very people shouting the insults. He paid it for us, for the times we've despised Him or put other things on the throne of our hearts. His payment on the cross wasn't a default on justice,it was the absolute fulfillment of it. He took the mockery so we wouldn't have to bear its eternal weight. So when we feel the sting of being misunderstood, canceled, or just laughed at,we're not alone in it. Our exhaustion from trying to manage our reputation is met by a Savior who willingly let His be destroyed. He absorbed the ultimate public shaming so that we could be truly seen and known by the Father. Read that like a gift, because that's exactly what it is.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Here is your assignment... Sometime today, find two minutes of total silence. No podcast, no music, no scrolling. In that silence, perform a quick audit on the voices you've been listening to,the critics, the doubters, your own inner accuser. Then, out loud, name one of them and say, 'Jesus already answered you.' That is the mission.
"Heavenly Father, we come to You holding the sting of other people's words and the exhaustion of trying to be approved. We confess we've let their opinions carry too much weight. But You sent Your Son to absorb the ultimate scorn, to bear the unbearable so we wouldn't have to. Help us to surrender the hurt into Your hands. Let us rest in the verdict You already pronounced over us at the cross. Remind us that we are seen and known by You. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Wow, this is so timely! Just what I needed today. Thinking about “The Scorn He Carried For Us” really grounds my perspective and helps align my focus. It’s such a powerful reminder of intentional sacrifice. Sometimes I forget the depth of that, honestly. It’s not just a concept, it’s… everything. Definitely sharing this. This is going right into my Sunday sermon prep thoughts.

Okay, just survived another toddler meltdown over a goldfish. Scorn he carried for us? Can I get a witness! He just… took it. No pretending it was easy.

You don't have to carry it alone.

All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head.Psalm 22:7

This verse gives a prophetic picture of Jesus on the cross. It’s not just one or two people; it describes a huge crowd of onlookers—from soldiers and rulers to the people in the street—all joining in to mock him in his final moments.

The taunts weren't just verbal. "To shoot out the lip" and "shake the head" were physical gestures of pure contempt. Think of someone sneering or making a mocking face. Ridicule is always hard to take, but it's especially cruel when directed at someone who is already in intense physical agony.

In today's language, the verse would read something like: "Everyone who sees me ridicules me. They sneer at me and shake their heads in contempt."
