    Hosea and the Unbreakable Love

    September 26, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Glad you carved out the time. You know that bookmark in the book on your nightstand? The one that hasn’t moved in three weeks? It’s a quiet little accusation, isn't it? A story we meant to finish, a promise we made to ourselves that got crowded out by everything else. It’s a small thing, but it points to a bigger one, our attention, our affections, they just drift. We mean well, but we wander. And it can leave us feeling a little guilty, a little restless.

The love of the Lord. — Hosea 3:1

    The Briefing

Let that sit for a second, because those four words are an anchor in a world that feels like it’s coming apart. "The love of the Lord." We’re so used to love being a transaction, right? A feeling we have to keep earning, a connection we have to maintain. We love our families, but sometimes we’re impatient. We love our work, but some days we just phone it in. Our love is a flickering flame, and we live with a low-grade exhaustion trying to keep it lit. But the love Hosea is talking about, the love God has for us, is a completely different thing. This isn't a feeling God has. It's a decision God has made. The context of this book is brutal. God’s people had cheated on him, forgotten him, chased after everything else. And God’s response wasn't to cut them off. It was to go and buy them back. Think about your own story. All the times we’ve messed up. The murmurings, the sharp words, the longings for a life we thought would be better than the one He gave us. He’s seen all of it. He has borne with our worst behaviors, our most selfish moments. And the commentary puts it this way: the same love that provided for you yesterday is the love that secures you tomorrow. It’s not a past event. It's a permanent reality. He who loved you then, loves you now. He is Alpha, and He will be Omega. This love is our navigation when we feel lost. It’s the constant that helps us chart a course through the noise and the restlessness. It’s the thing that keeps us on the home stretch when we’re tempted by every other exit ramp. I don’t know about you, but that takes the pressure off. Our job isn’t to sustain this love. Our job is to receive it. To let it change us. To finally, finally rest in the fact that we are held by a love that has never, not once, depended on our ability to hold on.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Here is where it gets uncomfortable. Because if God's love is that secure, we can actually rest in it. I want you to plant one seed of that rest today. Block out thirty minutes on your calendar. Don't fill it with errands. Just let it be empty space to breathe, to sit, to exist without performing. Protect it like it's your most important meeting. Or, if that's not where you are today: take a real lunch break. No phone. No screen. Step away from your desk and let the world run without you for twenty minutes. This isn't laziness. It's an act of trust in the God who holds everything together, including you.
"Gracious God, we claim this truth over our Saturday. Your love for us is not a fragile thing. It's the most durable reality in the universe. We confess that our own love wanders, our attention breaks, and we get tired. We try so hard to hold it all together. Remind us that we are held by You. Help us to stop striving and start resting in Your finished work. Let that truth sink deep into us today. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Grand morning here in Dublin, just listening to the news with my Barry’s. This bit about unbreakable love… ah, it just reminds you, doesn’t it, how God never gives up on us, even when we’re a bit contrary. Like watching after a daft neighbour who’s always losing their keys. Always there, full of favour. God is good.

    God bless, Mary

What Hosea 3:1 actually saysThe phrase "the love of the Lord" in this verse… more
The love of the Lord.Hosea 3:1

The phrase "the love of the Lord" in this verse points to a specific kind of love, one with a long track record. It’s defined by God’s consistent, patient history with his people.

This love is something you can see by looking back at the past. It’s a love that has led, provided for, and forgiven people even when they failed. It's also a love that's guaranteed for the future. The same God who loved his people then will never stop loving them. Nothing, not even death, can end it.
