Paul's Cure for Spiritual Drowsiness
đ§ Today's devotional â listen while you start your day
Hey there. Letâs get grounded together. I got an email the other day from some app I downloaded months ago and never opened. The subject line was: "We miss you!" And I just thought.. no, you don't. Your algorithm misses my data. It reminded me of playing Game Boy on long road trips as a kid, huddled next to a friend. We didn't need notifications to prove we were connected, we were just there. There's a kind of spiritual drowsiness that comes from confusing the algorithm for real presence, and it's leaving a lot of us feeling alone in a crowd.
Let us not sleep, as do others. â 1 Thessalonians 5:6The Briefing
Paulâs words here are so direct, right? "Let us not sleep." Heâs basically saying, donât just coast. Donât go on spiritual autopilot. And truth is, itâs so easy to do. Life is like a long night drive. The drone of the engine, the blur of the lights⊠it can lull you into a trance. But here's where it gets real. Paulâs solution isn't some complex spiritual discipline, itâs fellowship. Heâs pointing to the person in the passenger seat. He knew that believers who try to make the journey alone are the ones who end up on the spiritual breakdown lane. We need people who can check our blind spot, who can talk us through a tricky merge into a new season. And not just any talk, talk about Jesus. Talk about where He showed up, where weâre struggling to see Him. You know, where we pause to recognize the evidence of God. Itâs that shared story that keeps our eyes open. Because this isnât just a casual road trip, itâs an escape from something real, toward something eternal. And you donât fall asleep when the stakes are that high.
âïž Your Mission
So, what do we do with this? We stop trying to drive alone. I want you to try this specific act of wakefulness today. Text one person you know who might be feeling the drone of the road and say: "Thinking of you. How's the journey right now?" You're not fixing anything, you're just getting in the passenger seat for a second to help them stay awake."Dear Lord, quiet the engine noise and the phantom notifications in our souls. Forgive us for drifting, for letting our eyes get heavy on this journey home. Wake us up with the gift of real presence, both Yours and that of the people Youâve put on the road with us. Give us the courage to be the voice that keeps another traveler from nodding off. Help us stay awake to Your goodness and Your goal for us. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Itâs like, so easy to just zone out when Iâm slinging drinks, or just dealing with all this new belief stuff. Paulâs cure, though⊠itâs about actively waking up, you know? Mind-blown how I gotta choose to remember Godâs actually in the chaos, not just let my brain go on autopilot. Gotta stay sharp, damn.
You don't have to carry it alone.
