Psalm 36 and the End of Spiritual Numbness

    May 25, 2026

šŸŽ§ Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Hey there, Mason here. Glad you made it. I had one of those small wins this morning, I went to the mailbox expecting the usual junk mail and bills, and found a handwritten card from a friend I haven't seen in a year. Here's the thing, we get so used to the empty, impersonal stuff, the coupon for the store that closed, the offer addressed to 'resident', that we forget what real, personal abundance feels like. We're conditioned to expect crumbs.

They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of Thy house. — Psalm 36:8

    The Briefing

The Psalmist’s words here are an absolute earthquake to that expectation. 'They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of Thy house', which is just a first-century way of saying, 'You will be more than full on the very best of what God has to offer.' Not just full, abundantly satisfied. Not with leftovers, but with the 'fatness', the richest, most life-giving part of the entire meal. I mean, think about that. We so often come to God thinking we’ll be lucky to get the scraps from the back door. But the text promises a seat at the King’s own table. It’s the difference between a cockpit checklist and reaching cruising altitude, one is procedure, the other is peace. God isn’t running a soup kitchen for beggars; He’s hosting a wedding feast for His children. And honestly? He doesn't just give us enough to get by. He gives us Benjamin's portion, ten times more than we could have expected. This isn't about earning a seat, it's about the stunning reality that the seat has already been set for you. The only question is whether we'll accept the invitation and truly rest in it.

    āš”ļø Your Mission

So here is the mission, a way to plant a sabbath seed in someone else's day. Don't overthink it, just do this: Buy a coffee or a snack for a coworker who looks overwhelmed. Put it on their desk with a simple sticky note that says, 'From the King's table.' Don't wait around for a thank you. Just share the abundance.
"Lord Jesus, we confess we've gotten used to spiritual junk mail. We show up expecting leftovers because, honestly, that’s what the world usually offers. We brace for the minimum when You have prepared a feast. Straight up, help us to stop settling for crumbs and to take our seat at the table You’ve prepared. Let us uncover the deep rest that comes only from You. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Ah now, this bit about spiritual numbness… it just caught me while I was on my second cup of Barry’s this morning. Was just listening to the news, all the terrible things, and sometimes you just feel a bit… well, numb to it all, don’t you? Grand to be reminded God’s light still shines. God is good.

    God bless, Mary

Wild man. ā€˜spiritual numbness’… dude that phrase just hit me. like, that was my whole entire existence before two months ago. just kinda floating through everything, late nights at the bar, just doing the grind, not really feeling much of anything deeper than the surface stuff. mind blown right now thinking about it. it’s so weird now, like this… feeling. like the opposite of numb. i do not even know how to say this but it’s like actually *seeingstuff for the first time. psalm 36, i probably wouldn’t get it if i tried to read it alone. but the idea of that numbness ending? for real. is it like, hard to keep it from coming back?

You don't have to carry it alone.
