Exodus: Moses on Our Flawed Efforts and Christ's Pure Offering
Glad you're here. Yesterday, we talked about how Song of Songs reveals the profound, unbreakable bond of kinship and intimate love Jesus has for His people—a bond so deep it calls us both 'sister' and 'spouse'. But today, we're shifting gears a bit. You ever find yourself in that awkward small talk situation? Someone asks, 'How are you?' and you automatically say 'Fine!' even when you're anything but... or you're performing a task, and you know deep down your motivation isn't pure, but you go through the motions anyway, right? It's like we put on this spiritual facade, this outward performance that doesn't quite match the internal reality. The disconnect is a quiet ache...
"The iniquity of the holy things."— Exodus 28:38The Briefing
Moses gives us a glimpse here, not just into ancient rituals, but into our own hearts. The 'iniquity of the holy things' is a phrase that hits HARD. We often think of sin as the obvious, egregious acts—the BIG, public failures. But this verse peels back the layers on our best intentions, our worship, our service, even our private prayers. Think of it like a beautiful garden that you've meticulously cultivated. You water it, you prune it, you make sure it looks PERFECT from the surface. But underneath, unseen, the soil itself might be corrupted. Maybe the very compost you used had hidden toxins, or parasitic roots are slowly growing, ready to make everything wither from the inside out. Moses is showing us that even our most earnest efforts, the 'holy things' we offer to The Lord, can be tainted by pride, by vanity, by self-interest, by a wandering heart. The shocking truth is, we can't truly harvest pure fruit from corrupt roots on our own. But here's the profound hope: the High Priest, Aaron, bore that iniquity. And Jesus, our ULTIMATE High Priest, doesn't just bear our sin—The Lord presents before His Father not OUR unholiness, but his OWN perfect, unblemished holiness on our behalf.
⚔️ Your Mission
I want you to try something simple today. When you feel that internal nudge, that quiet doubt about the purity of your motives—maybe in an act of service, or even just a kind word you offer someone—instead of letting that thought make you feel like a spiritual fraud, just pause. Acknowledge it. 'Okay, Lord, I see that part of me, that selfish root or proud intention.' And then, immediately, pivot to GRATITUDE. Thank Jesus for His perfect covering. Thank The Lord that His holiness is our holiness, even when ours is anything but. Five seconds of honest, quiet thanks is enough. It's about consciously shifting from self-condemnation to Christ's compassion."Gracious God, we come to You with open hearts, acknowledging the deep truth Moses laid bare—that even our holiest intentions, our deepest prayers, and our earnest work can be tainted by the iniquity within us. We confess our pride, our vanity, our wandering hearts, the hidden roots that can wither our true spiritual growth. We release our grip on the need to appear perfect, to present a flawless spiritual facade. We surrender our flawed efforts, our impure motives, and the heavy burden of trying to be good enough. We thank You, Lord, that Jesus bears the iniquity of our holy things; that His perfect holiness is our righteousness. Help us to rest in Your grace, trusting in Your covering, and finding our worth not in our performance, but in Your redeeming love. In Jesus' name... Amen."

There is a lot of relief in that phrase—’the iniquity of holy things.’ It’s a gentle way of acknowledging that even when we really want to show up for God, our focus is often fragmented. We’ve all had those moments where we’re ‘performing’ a prayer while our minds are actually drifting toward the to-do list or the school run.
We leaned into this today at the shop. Instead of trying to fix our distracted hearts with more effort, we just used the Eben Tag to pause and pivot. We tapped, listened to the Daily Eb, and spent a few minutes with the Ink Journal.
Our entry wasn’t anything deep or ’perfect’—just a simple: ‘Lord, my focus is messy today, but thank You that I don’t have to be perfect to be Yours.’ It’s a beautiful thing to stop trying to be ‘good enough’ and just start recording the evidence of His provision instead. Thank you for reminding us that His grace covers the gaps in our focus.
