The Prayer That Pulls Against Our Own

    June 30, 2026

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

Peace be with you. There's something about working with your hands, isn't there? I was staining a small shelf this morning, just watching the wood grain come alive under the oil. And my whole focus was on preserving it. Sealing it. Trying to make this fragile, beautiful thing last as long as possible. We do that with people, too, don't we? We try so hard to hold on, to protect, to keep the people we love safe and near. But at the end of the day.. everything in this world is temporary.

Father, I will that they also, whom Thou hast given Me, be with Me where I am. — John 17:24

    The Briefing

Some mornings you just need to be reminded of what’s true. And this verse,it’s one of those truths that lands with real weight. Now lean in on this.. Jesus isn't making a suggestion here. He’s not floating a wish. He uses the strongest possible language: 'Father, I will..' It's a declaration. A statement of divine intent. He is saying that His deepest desire, the object of His determined will, is for His people, the ones the Father has given Him,to be with Him. Right where He is. Think about that. The ultimate goal of your life, from Christ's perspective, is not what you accomplish here, but your arrival there. And here’s the tension. A hard one. We often find our prayers pulling in the exact opposite direction. We kneel down and we plead, 'Father, let them stay with me. Heal them. Keep them here.' And at the very same moment, from the throne of heaven, Jesus is praying, 'Father, bring them home to me.' It's a tug-of-war between two loves. Our good love, and His perfect one. And His prayer, hear me on this, will always win. Because His 'where I am' is infinitely better than our 'where you are.' Every time a believer leaves this world, it feels like a loss to us. An emptiness. A defeat. But through the lens of this verse, it’s an answered prayer. It’s a victory. It's the sound of Christ saying, 'That one. She's Mine. It's time.' This doesn't erase our grief, not for a second. But it places a profound and eternal anchor underneath it. It means death for the believer isn't a tragic accident. It’s a divine appointment. It's the final chisel stroke before the art is moved into the King's gallery forever.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Here is how we walk this out... Jesus' prayer declares our ultimate value to Him. Today, we echo that in a small way. Let's get concrete: find one person and speak a blessing over them. Tell them one specific gift you see God has chiseled into their character. Don't just say 'you're great.' Say, 'I see God's faithfulness in how you show up every day.' Be the voice that reminds them they are wanted.
"Father, we confess that we hold on too tight. We want our people here, with us. Our prayers are so often for our own comfort, for things to stay the same. Forgive us for the times our will pulls against Yours. Help us trust that Your desire for us, and for those we love, is the greatest possible good. Give us the faith to let go, knowing we're letting them go directly into Your arms. Let that truth anchor us in our grief. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Pulling against your own stuff in prayer? That’s real. Real. Big facts for the block. Trying to get my head straight on this commute. 🔥

This is so timely! Exactly what I needed to hear after the series we just finished at church on aligning our will. It’s a daily discipline, honestly. That worship playlist keeps me grounded in it.
