John 16 and the Chamber of Unknown Sorrows
🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day
Hey, Welcome. It's just you, me, the Lord, and a couple of minutes. It's Saturday. A day that can feel wide open, or sometimes, just empty. You know, maybe your faith has changed recently. You're not sure what to call what it's changed into. It feels like standing in a familiar room after all the furniture has been moved out. The echoes are different. You don't know where to sit. There's this quiet sense of being scattered from what you once knew for sure. A feeling of being left, in some way, alone.
Ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone. — John 16:32The Briefing
The more I sit with these words, the less I want to explain them and the more I just want to let them land. Jesus looks at his closest friends, the ones who left everything, and tells them, 'A time is coming, and it's here now, when you'll be scattered. You'll run back to your own lives, and you will leave me completely alone.' Think about that. He knew it was coming. He wasn't surprised by the betrayal or the abandonment. He walked right into it. Okay but here's the part that wrecks me.. there are levels to this loneliness. In Gethsemane, most of the disciples were kept at a distance. Only a few were invited deeper in. And even of those few,Peter, James, and John, even they couldn't go all the way. They were told to wait a stone's throw away. There was an inner chamber to His grief that no one could enter. He had to tread that winepress alone. It was the ultimate, necessary pruning. Every human support, every friendly voice, had to be cut away so that the true fruit of salvation could grow. This wasn't a tragic accident. It was the cost of the harvest. And honestly? This changes how we see our own isolation. We all have moments where we feel scattered. When it feels like no one quite gets the weight we're carrying. But our loneliness isn't a void. It's a place Jesus has already been. He went to the furthest, most desolate edge of human experience so that wherever we find ourselves, He would already be there. Our ache isn't proof of His absence. It's an invitation to find His presence in the one place we were sure we had been left alone.
⚔️ Your Mission
So here is the mission... Think of one person you know who feels scattered or alone right now. Maybe their faith is in a weird place, or life has just left them isolated. Try this: Set a timer for five whole minutes. For those five minutes, hold the post for them. Intercede. Don't just mention their name, stand in the gap. Ask God to meet them in that lonely place, the very place He knows so well."Dear Lord, we can't fully understand the depth of the loneliness You carried for us. The thought of that quiet agony is overwhelming. Thank You for not turning back. Thank you for walking into that garden, knowing we would scatter. Help us surrender our own feelings of isolation, trusting that you've already consecrated that ground. Let us find You in the quiet, lonely places today. In Jesus' name... Amen."

“Chamber of Unknown Sorrows”—that phrase. Feels like diving into deep, shimmering indigo, like the water near Kits Beach. A vast, quiet holding place. There’s something strangely expansive about it. ✨
