Jeremiah's Remedy for a Distant Heart

Morning. Or afternoon. Whenever you are, I’m glad we’re connecting. You ever have that moment with your Bluetooth speaker? You hit play, expecting the music to fill the room you’re in, but instead you hear it faintly from two rooms away. It connected to the wrong device. The signal went out, but it didn't land where you intended. It's not a crisis, right? It's just.. a frustrating disconnect. A feeling that something is off. And sometimes our whole lives can start to feel that way,like we're sending out signals but living with a quiet, constant sense of being disconnected.

The Briefing

If we're being honest, sometimes the distance just creeps in. It’s not one big dramatic event. It's a slow fade. A quiet cooling. And we can get used to it. We can learn to live contentedly without the immediate, present joy of communion with God. Jeremiah's words here are a gentle but firm alarm bell. He's saying, 'Let's stop. Let's take an honest inventory of the path we're on and turn back to God.' It's a call to self-examination, but not for the sake of self-improvement. But there's a deeper current running here.. The diagnosis is that we've wandered. But the text doesn't leave us there, trying to fix ourselves. It gives us a direction: turn again to the lord. Notice it says 'turn again.' This isn't for people who've never known Him. It's for us. For those of us who know His goodness but have somehow found ourselves following from a distance. The ache of that distance is a kind of spiritual fever, a sign that something is wrong. And the temptation is to think we can fix it ourselves, to try and suture our own hearts back together. But that's not the gospel. The only remedy for a hard heart is a return to the cross. That's where we first received salvation. It's the only place we'll find renewal. It's not about trying to feel a certain way. It’s about returning to a certain place,to the foot of the cross, in all our mess and numbness and failure,and remembering the One who closed the greatest distance for us. We don't have to clean ourselves up to come home. Coming home is what cleans us up. That truth, right there, is oxygen for a tired soul.
