Nathan's Record of a Love That Stood Watch

🎧 Today's devotional — listen while you start your day

If you’re hiding in the laundry room for two minutes of peace,I see you. Welcome. You ever have that moment with a password? You’re absolutely certain you know it. You type it in with total confidence. Denied. You try again. Denied again. Now you’re locked out of your own account. It’s maddening. And honestly? Sometimes forgiveness feels like that. We thought we dealt with a wound. We forgave the person. We were sure the account was settled. But then a memory comes back, the hurt reopens, and it feels like the password changed. We’re locked out of our own peace, and the work feels utterly undone.

And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of theair to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night. — 2 Samuel 21:10

    The Briefing

Stay with me here.. This is one of the most haunting scenes in the entire Old Testament. Rizpah’s two sons, along with five of Saul's other descendants, have been executed and their bodies left exposed,a sign of ultimate shame. And she refuses to leave. She makes a small, defiant camp on the rock next to their bodies. For months. From the beginning of the barley harvest in April until the rains came in October. She endured the summer heat. The night chills. Fending off vultures by day and jackals by night. It’s an act of love so fierce it’s almost unbearable to imagine. And it’s meant to be a mirror for us. The commentary I’ve read on this passage points out a painful distinction. Her sons were killed by other hands. But our Lord,He was crucified by our sins. If a mother’s love could compel her to this kind of steadfast vigil for the innocent, what should our love look like at the foot of the cross for the One who died for the guilty? Our culture celebrates the big, loud, fast gesture. But God honors the long, quiet, patient watch. This is where we practice the presence of God,not just in a moment of crisis, but in the long, slow work of staying put. It's kinda like a master craftsman at a lathe. The wood has to be held firmly, turning against the chisel, for anything beautiful to be shaped. We hate that friction. We want to jump off. We want the shaping to be done in an instant. But God’s work in us doesn’t warp to our schedule. He holds us. He stays with us through the long process. Rizpah’s story isn’t just about her love for her sons. It’s a picture of the kind of enduring, protective love that God Himself models, and the kind He calls us to. It’s a love that shows up, and stays, and guards what is sacred, no matter the cost.

    ⚔️ Your Mission

Let's make this practical... Who in your life needs your presence more than your opinion? Not a quick text, not a 'like'. Presence. A long watch. Maybe that looks like showing up and sitting with them in their grief or their confusion, even for just fifteen minutes, without trying to fix it. Your mission today is to guard a little space for someone else. Be the one who doesn't look away.
"Heavenly Father, we confess our impatience. We want a password for peace, an instant fix for the wounds that linger. We run from the long, hard, quiet work of love. We don’t want to stand watch,we want to move on. Give us a heart like Rizpah’s. A steadfast, protective love for what is sacred to You. Teach us to endure the friction, to trust the work of Your hands even when it’s slow. Help us to just stay put with You, and with the people You’ve put in our lives. In Jesus' name... Amen."

Love that stood watch? Yeah. That hit different. Different. Gotta be out here, present for the block, always. No cap. Real talk. About to head to youth night, still on watch for the crew. 👊

Walking Bear this morning, this whole “love that stood watch” thing kept turning over. Yep. That’s the whole ballgame right there. Not fancy words or big speeches at the pulpit. Just showing up, day in, day out. Being there when it counts. Making sure the rebar is tied right, pouring a good foundation, even if nobody ever sees it. The quiet stuff. The dependable stuff. That’s what builds something that lasts, folks. For your family, for your neighbor. More of that is needed. Less flash. Got me thinking about a lot more than just the job site. Really did. Yep. 👍
